I am graduating from an academy this year with my unlimited mates, and I am pretty set on going union right afterwards. I hold my Tankerman Assist endorsement, but I was unable to get on board a tank vessel during school to get enough time and Loads/Discharges (I completed my Cadet time with an LNG carrier). My question is what would be the fastest way to get my time and transfers to submit for my PIC. Any guidance would be sweet.
All of the tanker companies are hiring 3M’s without PIC’s. Pick what union you want to go with and apply. Submit for your PIC when you get the loads/disch on the tanker. It sucks for the Chief Mate and other Mates that will have to cover your watch, but that’s the quickest way.
ATBs are 1.5 days is seatime so that’s your fastest route. Most of the bigger ones will grant you your tankship PIC.

AMO is desperate for PIC’s. Call the EVP and say you want to get your PIC and they’ll find a ship for you.

Adding this, they’ll have you ride as a PIC observer for 90 days being paid 3rd mate pay, but youre an extra.
MMP’s tankers (SLNC) had Jr. 3rd Mate slots in order to get folks the required signoffs and loads/discharges for the PIC.
AMO has tons of tanker jobs though. I’d venture to say you’d be better off going there and finding something much quicker. I’m also positive the tankers there aren’t death traps like SLNC’s
