Just came across with one article, one of Tagos ship (USNS Assertive? if my memory serves) was harrassed by Chinese warships & fishing boats
on Chinese EEZ…On board on USNS were 12 navy guys and 22 civilians etc…

Any info’s welcomed…Like How many OT they limit, something like that, too…

I’ve worked on two of the SWATH hull jobs. The first was still MSC crewed, I was a plankowner A/B. The second I was Third Mate. maersk Line Ltd had the contract. All officers were AMO, all unlicensed were SIU. Captain and all crew are civilians. We carried government contractors who did the sonar work. There might have been a Navy guy or two but I don’t really remember any.
third Mate was making $80.00 per day in '99. I was only allowed 12 hours OT per week. Weekend watch was paid at a lower rate of pay than regular OT. 30 minute OT for meal relief every other day. 90 day hitch. We sat at the dock for a week when I first signed aboard, then did 73 straight days underway. Waited two weeks in port for my relief.

73 straight days ? Wow, how’s the vegetables? They go bad really quick. How did they feed you?

After the first couple of weeks all the vegetables were canned or frozen. Naturally the food service gets worse as the trip goes on. And yeah! 73 straight days above the Arctic circle in winter. That’s the longest I’ve ever gone between ports I can tell you. By the way, I understand the pay has improved significantly since I did the job.

As long as there’s vegies on the table…
Canned & Frozen vegies are not bad, better than nothing comparing to one seiner fishing in the ocean 3~4 Months without any vegies at all.

What did you crew do all those times ? Very Curious…

Very little OT. Everyone had a TV in their rooms and there were lots of videos in the ship’s library. Allegedly there was tons of porn too. I never saw any, of course. Ahem… They had a pretty good library of books too. Mainly you just tried not to get on everyone else’s nerves.

I wanted to revive this Thread to see if there’s been any update? How about work on the T-AGM’s???

T-AGOS still suck. T-AGMs are not much better. I’ve spent plenty of time onboard both. The only thing they’re good for is to knock out a lot of sea time.

I sent a resume to Maersk and recieved a reply. The pay was $6,000/month for a first engineer with 15 days vacation a month at 1/2 pay or $1,500 on top of 6k so it is $7,500/ month or $250/day for all the offshore folks. I think the head cook on a boat I worked on in the GOM made that much. The grass and money is greener elsewhere. Too bad all our politicians didn’t work for the lowest bid salary and benefits.

I heard there is a lot of port time with TAGOS ships. And it’s kinda cake work for engineers. But that is pure rumor. Chances are with pay like that it’s probably non-stop crisis maintenance. Good for learning, bad for your body.

Yeah, they hang around Sasebo and such

I think the TAGOS ships are slightly under 4,000 HP. That could be a problem for an “unlimited” engineer who wants to use the time to upgrade.

There is a reason that the TAGO’s ship jobs are always on the open board. They are minimum 120 day hitches, but chances are you will do 135 +. I personally know a 2nd mate who did 210 days on board one. These boats either sit in port or you are gone at sea for long periods of time putting around at 2 knots. The T-AG’s ships don’t pay much, but you go to some cool ports depending on the ship you are assigned.

I worked on TAGOS ships for US Marine Mgmt. in the early '90’s. AMO applicant status and 3M pay was rock bottom. Doesn’t sound like much has changed. Spent a few days in Harstad, Norway for storm avoidance. That was the highlight of that job.

I just recently stepped off of a Tagos boat as CM. The pay is not great, there is certainly better elsewhere and they definitely screw you on vacation pay. But if you are looking for sea time to upgrade and a paycheck, go for it. On the whole the work is not too bad, decent port time, but long stretches underway. Just stay away from the Observation Island.

Being that this is coming from JD, I have to believe it. I’m looking to get my Unlimited License and need the HP. The HP ratings I saw would put it over the 4,000 limit. Can someone whos been onboard tell me what HP rating they got credit for???

If you get me a specific ship name(s), I’ll check. Apparently there were a few versions and some T-AGOS have greater HP.
