Anyone wanna work 45-60 days for $1,000? Apply within! They can’t find anybody and for the life of them, they can’t figure out why!!
Last year or two years ago they went out with Cal Maritime’s ship and under contract with Patriot. They made money hand over fist. Honestly I’m not sure why they don’t just try and stick with a setup like that.
You had guys doing 150+ days on the old ship who walked away with $10k after taxes and the very next year they act dumbfounded when no one wants to make a trip with them. If you’re off another job and have nothing else to do it’s whatever — but in general it’s amazing they can even offer the wages they do with a straight face.
If money is only part of the salery, they’re way over evaluating nostalgia if it only pays $1K.
It’s not literally $1,000– I’m more poking fun at the insanely low wages paired with their desperation. It’s like they’re not even trying to make it worth anyone’s while. Training ship or not, your license is still in the rack and you are responsible for a lot of shit.
It’s basically volunteer work at that pay. Though I admit, I’d do it, if I had the time off from work.
The reason I thought $1,000 a contract, week or month was legit because I work research & some folks pay to come on to work for 8-10 weeks. Other support hands make a little above minimum wage. All non-mmc holding positions of course.
I think when I graduated about 10+years ago they were advertising ~$150/day. Tugboat deckhands were making about $250 a day at the time.
I did it - it was free sea time and it’s not very hard work. But I was young and single and needed seatime. Now I’ve got kids and I don’t lol.
Is it really 1k? I worked there some 12-15 years ago, at that time they payed stipend of something like 6-7k or $135/day.
Whatever this is supposed to mean…
Salary/Compensation: The salary is based on a daily rate of pay and will commensurate with license, certification and experience. Meals are included.
From what I was told…
Years ago, under scatterbrained Rick Smith, everyone got paid something different based on license, if you returned, if he liked you, etc… you would have three people with the same license making three different wages for no apparent reason whatsoever. It was streamlined when Morgan McManus took over.
Now I believe the max for operational level licenses (you hit a cap after returning a certain number of times) is $250 per day. After taxes and (if you’re MMP) the union’s deductions you’re left with peanuts. No one is making anywhere near a professional mariner’s wage out there. No one expects a Matson-level contract or wages, but they certainly don’t have a right to freak out as much as it seems they do when they can’t find anyone willing to offer their services.
I love when job postings for mariners add this in. For tugs/day boating I understand it’s important bc sometimes you get a good stipend or something, but hilarious to see a ship going to sea for 90ish days having to specify that yes, you get free meals.
What about linens?
Probably best to bring your own.
They supply linens, but they’re horrible quality. A dog wouldn’t take a shit on them…
Since it was not explicitly mentioned I believe that means you have to bring your own
Whenever a potential employer refuses to supply linens or mentions linens as a job perk, its best to follow up by asking about cutlery & toilet paper just to be sure.
Oh that they have.
Captain? Ha! Did you ever see that show, that was least capable/qualified crew of well intentioned idiots I have ever seen. They were lucky to have survived sailing with that bumbling fool.
