The Sea Shepherd conservation group’s ship the Steve Irwin has left Hobart with the goal of protecting bluefin tuna in the Mediterranean Sea.
The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) is meeting in Qatar this week and will vote on whether to list the bluefin tuna as endangered and restrict catches.
The Steve Irwin has refueled and resupplied after what its crew calls its most successful campaign to date against Japanese whalers in the Southern Ocean.
Captain Paul Watson says with the whaling season over it is time for the next campaign.
“Our plans for the tuna campaign is to go to the Mediterranean, because the blue fin tuna is now going to be put on the endangered species list with CITES,” he said.
[B]“Our objective is just to directly intervene their fishing operations. So if we catch anybody illegally fishing tuna, we’ll cut their nets and release their tuna.”
The Sea Shepherd ship the Bob Barker will leave Hobart at the end of the month.[/B]
What do the mariners and fishermen here think if this action?
How will they know if the nets from “illegal” tuna fishers? Oh and they plan to mostly go after Tuna Fishers from Malta since the small island nation can do little to stop them without a proper navy
I do believe some fish populations around the world are being threatened. But He is going about it in the absolute worst way. To go after fisherman that have been doing their thing for generations. is appaling. As a life long mariner It enrages me that he is even allowed near the water. It has been debated over and over again on here of what bad seamanship he displays, so no need to beat a moronic pirate anymore. I believe he needs to be stopped - and I think he might just meet his demise from a seriously pissed of fisherman and i dont think his toy badge is going to stop a real bullet.

I agree with Jeffrox. The fishermen in the med won’t put up with the BS and they are not passive like the Japanese. Wasn’t it the the SS that sunk a french vessel some years ago. It might be time for pay backs.

The person who was killed was Fernando Pereira, who wasn’t a crew member of the Greenpeace ship, but was instead a freelance journalist who reborded the vessel after the inital blast (and evacuation) and died when the subsequent explosion occurred.
I can assure you that if some nutjob rammed [I]my[/I] vessel with intent to sink it and board me for some imagined fishing violation… lets just say there would be some serious problems for the idiots doing the ramming.

Question about Tuna Fishing. DO the tuna fishermen stay with their nets? Or do they leave them unattended? because I suspect that if the nets are left unattended they intend on cutting the nets loose and sinking them to he bottom f of the ocean liek they did with a net they found in the Southern Ocean this year.
Unless the ships tow their nets are stay close byy think the SS ship will stay away from them.
Before the show started, I thought it would be awesome. But on the first episode the guy in charge went on about how he refused to hire qualified mariners and would only take idealist volunteers. In an introduction to the “Chief Engineer” he admitted that he had no mechanical knowledge and had never even changed his own tire. It amazes me that they even manage to get out of port.
