That’s not lazy, that’s multi tasking
Yes. He was taking a shit, reading a novel, and eating a sandwich. I also remember him eating a sandwich at a F&B drill, when he stuffed the last bite in his mouth, he reached into his grubby pocket and pulled out a piece of chicken and started chomping on that.

now there is an American mariner for you! a true credit to the profession…
I bet the man sailed during WWII and likely had been torpedoed multiple times…obviously a man cut from steel reinforced cloth
unlike the newest generation of merchant marweenies and blueberries

He sounds like the guy who turns perfectly good new pillows from Walmart into malodorous, yellow stained biological monstrosities that should only be handled and removed by a hazmat team in full A-suits with SCBA.
I have seen these first hand along with mattresses that were unfit for the homeless under a overpass. I have seen more than one crew member sent home due to poor hygiene and gross personal behavior. Thankfully they have been few and far between.
Too many of those filthy captains to count. Take a fucking shower and quit eating in your bunk!

There’s no excuse for it. Worst I ever saw was actually a female. This was the Navy and the berthing held about 50 or so. She did not change her sheets for months and they were BLACK. She would take naps in her work clothes and was just an overall slob. We finally had enough and made her change her linen, wash her clothes and clean up her area. Women can be pretty nasty, make no mistake.
And in a communal living area, being a slob is grounds for summary execution. I’m partial to the Saudi method, using an arab guy with a big scimitar.
Oh, and right behind slobby girlfriend I’d like to nominate the ex-submariner I worked with who would sit there and clean out his ears with those wooden Q-tips in the white paper packages, the ones that were for cleaning motion picture projectors and other small machines? He’d leave those things all over the shop. He would also surreptitiously pick his nose when he thought we weren’t looking…Off with his head, too.

This is all I have to say to that C. Capt:

but why son?..I thought you had nothing but blind adoration for the crusty one?

Agree that blueberries were a dumb idea that only the gubment could design.
But what’s this dissin’ the ‘next generation of merchant marweenies’? I take great umbrage.

Take all the umbrage you want but look around you at your classmates and tell me they are cut from heavy storm canvas or the flimsiest cheesecloth? Look hard I say!
Been doing this for over 30 years and I can tell you the number of maritime graduates after the turn of the century who are capable to be true seaman who can serve on the dirtiest, oldest, hardest working vessels out there are a tiny fraction of the total. Most are little more than button pushing ballerinas. Used this photo before and use it again today!
Just had to reply with a photo or two of one of NY Maritime’s finest, Edward Villella, class of 1957. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Villella
One of the greatest ballet dancers ever. http://www.villelladance.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Edward_Villella_0.jpg

I don’t get it. In 1957 when the US Merchant Marine was still a powerhouse, this guy chooses to dance instead of sail? I mean, I can understand today a maritime academy kid not finding any decent seagoing jobs and giving up to find other work, but 1957 when we still had the world’s largest fleet of foreign going liner ships? Ships with booms that would spend weeks in great posts world over. A true seafarer’s life of wine, women and song and getting paid well at the same time, but he wanted to dance instead?
it just don’t add up?

I guess he really liked to dance, or really didn’t like to sail!

A '57 grad, huh?
That puts him about the same vintage as C.Capt.
So old crusty one - tell me again how your generation bred real sailors while the youth of today are nothing more than button pushing ballet dancers.

Hush now young padawan, it takes a real man to wear a tutu. Or didn’t they mention that somewhere along your travels?

Male ballet dancers (ballerinos?) are some pretty strong hombres, to boot. No wimps allowed.

Man how do y’all find this stuff. That TV reporter Geraldo Rivera went to Suny, then dropped out… at least he didn’t become a ballerina.

I can describe it with only four simple words but you have to put them in the correct order
positioning, money. dynamic & huge
