I am dual citizen Australian/Greek working with the Greek Shipping Companies for more than 10 years. Planning to move permanently with my family and work as an Australian seaman in Australia’s shipping industry. I am a Merchant Marine Engineer class 1 and so far working on tankers.
- Can you please advise which companies paying the highest wages for chief engineers at tanker and offshore?
- Can someone explain with details how is the payment system in Australia for example basic wages, owner bonus, seniority bonus, leave pay e.t.c
- If the contract says an amount of money per annum what does this means, how many months I have to be onboard?
In Greek industry we have for example 6 months contract and get payed for six months and during vacation no earnings!
Before I answer your questions, a word of warning.
The Australian Merchant Navy has been decimated by the introduction of flag of convenience tonnage to our international and domestic trade routes. We are an island continent and are now down to a fleet of around 15 vessels. There is therefore not a great deal of job opportunities.
Irrespective of your STCW qualifications, even if you get a start, promotion is not merit based……it is generally seniority based.
Generally, engineering employment conditions are governed by an Enterprise Based Agreement between the AIMPE and shipowner. You can research these online. Rotations are one for one and you remain on your award based pay when on leave.
Good luck.
Thank you very much for your response… what is your opinion for working with Teekay Australia tanker fleet and osm & mma offshore shipping…do you know chief engineer wages?
