Video of the Evergreen, a new container ship that can hold 20,000 containers, arriving at Amazonehaven in Rotterdam, Netherlands, after the ancient trading port was enlarged to handle the new class of monster ships. This ship debarked from Malaysia, and will ply the route from Asia to Europe. It is one of the first equipped with “scrubbers” to reduce diesel exhaust.
Amazonehaven has nothing to do with Jeff Bezos’ Amazon, except that it does, in a global sense. Ninety percent of world trade is done on freighters like this. More than 1,000 containers are lost at sea every year.
Every one of those green containers represents jobs lost in Europe because of a very un-level business environment.
Yet people celebrate the arrival of such a monster.
