Can someone please amend the Scuttlebutt description to forbid political diatribe?
Go start a podcast, start a political forum, go yell into the void of your choice… but for the love of God, please shut your piehole with any subject even slightly related to politics on this forum, scuttlebutt or otherwise!
Forum policy is to avoid overly political discussions. Which category is not relevant.
@244 point was that some maritime topics are sometimes political in nature which is why that articles with some link to politics (JA for example) sometime appear on the front page. That point is also irrelevant because the post about your beef is not in any way maritime related.
My post above and before was about MY SONS and their service with ISAF on behalf of USA. If you think that deserves being berated by your President on a forum like the WEF, then that is on you.
PS: I’m not “yelling into a Void”. Have you noticed the reactions from other nations to this disgraceful performance by our favourit President?
List of reasons why many forums ban or discourage politics on their sites:
High conflict, low payoff – Political threads often escalate into arguments, personal attacks, or flame wars much faster than other topics.
Moderation burden – Politics requires heavy, constant moderation to enforce civility and rules.
Community fragmentation – It can polarize members and damage the sense of community, even among people who agree on the forum’s main topic.
Topic drift – Political debates quickly dominate and drown out lighter, casual off-topic conversation.
Moderation burden - that’s what happening right now, I’m sitting next to a nice fire (-15° C outside) with a good book to read and I’m doing this instead.
The owner of this forum is a strong supporter of the current administration, that is no secret. It sure seems like speaking ill of Trump is now much more quickly shut down than in the past and the forum is more woke Just don’t click on the forum if it is all too much.
That’s correct, and it’s true of all posts about politics in general. The reason has been posted on this thread:
This forum has been through this cycle before. A while back, as an experiment the restrictions on political topics were loosened. Things stayed low-key for awhile, then, as a national election approached, political discourse became more heated and posts here reflected that. People were starting accounts here just to argue politics.
In response moderation of political topics was tightened. That time the same thing happened. Some members raised hell about supposed censorship, suppression of first amendment rights and so forth.
Politics in the U.S. and elsewhere are starting to heat up again and that’s been reflected in an increase in the amount and intensity of the posts here. This is a professional mariners forum, just reining things in some.
Your response was a perfect example of why political diatribe is so caustic and destructive in forums, family gatherings, churches, etc… it poisons everything. No place is a sanctuary from the incitement and rage…
Your strawman fallacy response was textbook example of this rage-hating incitement… you try to pull me into your debate. A debate that I had no intention of engaging. You posted assumptions, that because I was unwilling to engage your political bullshit, somehow I supported the opposite side of your argument.
I have my opinions about politics, religion, sex, gender, iced coffee, and pineapple on pizza. It’s a minefield to attempt any sort of discussion with any of you thin skinned, hate mongering, riot inciting M’fr’s… I choose not to engage. I formulate my actions according to my conscience, and I don’t need, nor want, anyone else’s approval.
So I wasn’t debating the content of your argument. I simply made it known that I wish you could take your cause elsewhere.
I stand by my original replies to you.
And for anyone reading this thinking that I support your party, your religion, or your anything… please know that I have zero fucks to give to any of it… I have a non-denominational aversion towards any and all of it. You are all tools. Divided and helpless… you yell into a void, just how they want you…
Yes Sun Tzu (544 - 496 BC) was a wise man. His most famous righting “Art of War” (not to be confused with “Art of the Deal”) are still being studied by military personnel in most of the world.
PS: I must admit, not being a military person myself, I have not read it, but I would not be surprised if at least our oldest son has.
I agree wholeheartedly. I have my own opinions on most things as well.
My political views are neutral, both on domestic politics here in Norway, in world politics and in religious matters.
In a broader context, I find a fair exchange of opinions both exhilarating and rewarding, as well as educational. (Provided it is kept civilized)
I’m for facts and fairness, however, both in politics and in general.
What I’m against is falsity, lies and talking negatively of those who disagree with you. (Incl. using profanities)
I noticed that a 17-year old thread came to life and was shut down after it attracted a few new posts today.
Wouldn’t it be possible for a moderator to open a new thread, transfer the new posts there (with a link to the old one), then shut it down?
Better still; set a time limit (say 3 years after last post) for any new post to be added to old threads, but with the threads still being detectable on search.
If anybody searching for a subject find an interesting old thread and want to make a comment, they can open a new thread and link to the old one for clarity.
That would avoid the problem of everybody who had posted on the old thread getting an e-mail warning whenever a new post appears.
This should be possible to do with algorithm, without the need for any moderator to spend precious time on such a monden task.
PS: If this is a stupid suggestion I’m sure I’ll be told, in no uncertain terms.
Hitting search will reveal !!! His Majesty ,excellence Chairmen Mao Himself in full glory in this link.
dated 2007 !!!
and the thread is STILL OPEN!!!
Nobody dares to close the sanctimonious words of Chairman Mao!!
Have You heard about rules based order??? Surely You have.It means : we make the rules but it is only You who has to follow them.
Or my Dear Dr.Bugge have You heard : Do as we say BUT NOT AS WE DO. ???
Now You know.
And if you have time and energy to experiment with above search engine try from 2007 all the way to say 2017 and You will see THOUSANDS of threads not closed and enter the word Politics and or similar and YOu will find who started the threads. Do not know yet??? The gCaptain NOBILITY and high priests
Now You know??? You bloody foreigner
but You are still lucky that You are not " MEP - mid european peasant" - guess what ???, I know who has coined the phrase here on this forum and I am waiting patiently for my chance
By the way . I am wondering why You have only " Basic " righs on your profile having 24+ badges ? But it is still better then being in " greenhorn" cathegory.
Cheers.
Just in case i have saved this in pdf in case incognito flags will come into action from the hostiles
Strictly hypothetically speaking. What if the owner of the website was vying for a position in the current US administration, wouldn’t negative comments about that administration not be a good look?
I am receiving on email two letters from gCapt. One is news brief ,with job offers and it is ended with links to some forum threads.
I am not sure if these links are chosen randomly .
After some years of observing this site i have noticed the stromg amplitude of politica leanings from woke left to …i do not know how to qualify the present.
Before this forum i was using gCapt FB and there i saw in comments lot of criticism ,the sight is political and strongly left & liberal leaning pro DM and i saw decline in the number of comentators there.
The forum i found more interesting due to large number of old salts and professionals from many different maritime branches.
This forum is well designed to force / coerce users into group thinking . The mechanism enabling such manipulation is embeded in INCOGNITO FLAGGING.
I would like to see who flagged me., who liked, check the ratio and contact via PM a person who flagged me and discuss or debate or clarify sth that can be simple misunderstanding in private.
As to administration membership
i think that in any country maritime administration should be filled with ppl who know the ropes and who are passionate abt it but most of all patriotic.
In my subjective ,allien / foreign opini
on His Majesty Chairman Mao is a perfect choice.
With Dr. Sal added as spokesman , both would be a formidable pair representing local seafaring interest. LOCAL ONLY meaning within J.A. bubble.
