Sail training ship aground in Norway

Yesterday:


Dutch sailing vessel NOORDERLICHT, IMO:8650813, which ran aground last night. All passengers and crew except the skipper and engineer have been evacuated. AQS HERMOD ( MMSI:257832500) on site. Photo: NSSR

I thought those fjords were deep.

Yes, deep but narrow some places. Pilots used to show off by taking cruise ships alongside an overhanging cliff near Geiranger. No bow thrusters or tugs. (No longer allowed, even if it would be easier with the modern cruise ship)

This is a passage between skerries, not in a fjord.

Looks more dramatic than it was. She run aground on HW and took a dramatic list at LW, but was free at next HW. No major damages reported:


She was on her way north along the inshore fairway, heading towards Svalbard for the start of season there.
