Rules of the Road

I recorded all the rules on a tape (Pre CD stuff) and played them over and over, driving the car or lying in bed. That was 32 years ago. I still know them, and amaze cadets and junior offices when I quote them word for word. However, ammendments made during the last 20 years; well, I can not remember them !!!.
An excellent resource for the “what if” questions are the NTSB, USCG, and MAIB investigative reports that come out on a regular basis.

I don’t think there is an electronic version of Farwell’s.
Here’s a couple of others, they are from Cornell Maritime Press, so they should not be too hard for a mariner to find:

The Law of Marine Collision. Nicholas J. Healy. The author is a founding partnewr of a major admiralty law firm in New York (Healy & Baillie). It gets heavy into the law, but by law book standards, it’s fairly readable by a knowledgeable layman.
The Law of Tug, Tow, and Pilotage. Alex L. Parks. Lots of good stuff here in addition to a chapter on collision.

Also good, but probably harder to find is “Collisons at Sea” aka “Marsden” (for the orginal author). You might find it listed as “Marsden on Collisions at Sea.” Warning for all of the above. Law books are expensive, look for used copies if possible.

Hi guys,

Since I started this thread I thought I would give you an update

I successfully passed my OOW, and got a strong reaction from the examiner by quoting several rules verbatim… I have to say this was through hard work and the use of the iphone app “Rules of the Road - Made Easy”

I know that I sound like a bit of a salesman, but this app really helped me through my exams!
Hope it can help some other people!!

ROR by Mariners Planet is a free app on android.
I just downloaded the trialware of NavRules. It is free to try and $20 to buy but that’s for the PC. I emailed the guy and asked if I have to pay again to get it on my iPhone?
I’ll probably go with NavRules on the PC and the less expensive “Made Easy” on the iPhone…

Anybody know if old school Flashcards are available? I actually have a set that looks like playing cards but it only shows the light configs. I was hoping to find a set that asks questions like right of way, who is the stand on vessel, etc. If I can’t find a set I’ll make my own.
Flash cards are still available at least from Captain’s Nautical Supplies in Seattle, WA.
