Hello i have Radar Observer Unlimited wwhich it expired several years back due to me being out of the Marine industry.
My Question is shouldnt i be able to take a refresher course to renew it?
I have read 46 CFR 11.480 Radar observer and dont see info on “Expired Renewal”
Any Advice helps i havent really see this subject being discussed in google searches.
be nice if JdCavo will Chime in.
My understanding is if you have the endorsement on your licensee you can take the renewal no matter how over the expired date you are. But I’m guessing you let your license lapse too? Several years is vague so I would give exact date of last renewal and status of your license to get a better answer.

OK my 100ton masters expired in 2001 and my radar observer unlimited expired in 2005
If that helps My application for “Expired” renewal and change of scope from inland to NC is in “awaiting PQEB” through a licensing consultant.
I don’t see in the CFR mentioned in the previous post talk about expiration time or renewal limits.

You can take the renewal course even if the endorsement had lapsed and was n o longer on your license. But, expect to have to provide proof of having taken the original course in the past.
If you renew without being current on radar, you won’t get the endorsement in your MMC, and after that just taking the renewal course won’t be enough. You’ll have to apply to add the endorsement back before you’ll be considered qualified to work on a vessel that requires radar observers.

thanks for reinforcing my understanding jdcavo.
Im planning on Upgrading/renewing MMC. My MMC and Radar expire in June. I plan to apply next month when I get ashore. My question is do they require at least a year or 6 months remaining on your Radar endorsement or will they issue my MMC as long as my Radar is current. Im going to take the renewal, just curious if i can get a head start on the application before the class. ECDIS and Leadership are already taken care of. Thanks for any advice
