Pro's and Con's of working for Vane....?

BEST SHOW EVER. BEST CHARACTER OF THE BEST SHOW EVER.

Vane has very nice poeple working there. They treat you very well. Pay isn’t the best, but they have decent benefits, a wide variety of work, and decent equipment.

If they where within 50.00 of the going rate on Richmond Terrace I think they would have more people. Sometimes the pay isn’t everything, and their equipment seems pretty good. The contract in July will decide a lot of things for a lot of people.
Everyone else has pins, and you won’t… Unless you like being weatherbound, asking ferries to slow down, etc. They seem to ‘frown’ upon pilots and assist boats too.
From my experience that’s not true. I’ve never had a problem having a Pilot or assist when needed. If others aren’t taking a Pilot into an area that they are not familiar with, well then, that’s just plain ignorance on their part. And as far as assists go, I see most of our boats when in NY being assisted into a dock.

Just going on my own experience. When guys ask you about the most basic stuff (wheres the dock?!?? Do I have to go through any bridges??) and get out of certain moves with inches to spare on a regular basis it makes you wonder why they don’t take a boat or a pilot more often. And that may just be something local to a particular place i have in mind. Obviously not a company policy but they are the only guys I see it happen to on a regular basis.

Bad boatmen? Definitely not. Bad company? Definitely not. Would I work there? If I wanted to do wire work on reasonable sized modern equipment, I wouldn’t have a problem with it.

Well. I won’t get into my particular opinions on some of the things I see go on around here. As I said, I’ve never had a problem with having a pilot or an assist. The dispatchers may grumble, but Vane won’t deny anything in regards to a safe passage and arrival. Speaking of which, passage planning is an important part of our job as operators. So maybe more priority should be placed on that. Piloting guides give info on bridges. Know what I mean? I’ll stop before I get on a rant. I know where you’re coming from though, Z-Drive.

Vane brothers is a really nice company to work for. I spent two years there as ab before I left to go to eco. I do miss my time there. They would always call you back whenever you left a voicemail. And they sent out sea time letters whenever you asked. Pay isn’t the best for a northeast company. But for the most parts is brand new equipment. And they pay the officers according to the horsepower of the boat you are on. I would probably go back to vane brothers if they were to call me
