Giant new Iraqi port touted as alternative gateway to Europe - Splash247

The Grand Faw port project has been on the drawing board since 2010. Much delayed, it is expected to be completed by the end of next year. The port, which features the world’s longest breakwater (pictured), is located on the northern tip of the Persian Gulf near Basra and is set to be among the largest ports in the Middle East when it finally opens, catering for containers, dry bulk and tankers.

Earlier this year, Turkey and Iraq unveiled a massive, 1,200 km, $17bn road and rail link project (see map below) linking the Grand Faw port in southern Iraq to Turkey’s border and further extending into Europe, avoiding the Suez Canal.

Mayor Eric Adams also yesterday announced an initial $80m investment in the Brooklyn Marine Terminal to stabilise and repair Piers 7, 8, and 10, and to fund planning for the 122 acre waterfront’s future, including an up to $15m investment to fund a new container crane. There is also a $15m commitment for a future cold storage facility on-site.

“Today’s announcement marks the next great chapter for Brooklyn’s storied waterfront and is a win for the people of New York City,” said New York governor Kathy Hochul. “The transfer will allow the city, working in close partnership with the community and my administration, to begin the long-anticipated process of reimagining the Red Hook piers as a modern maritime facility that also serves community needs. Our partners at the port authority will ensure that the marine terminal at Howland Hook remains a thriving shipping hub.”

Looks like US politics open opportunities for both Finnish and Japanese crane manufacturers to expand their US market:

Konecranes has announced it is establishing a network of partners to build a full range of port cranes in the US, joining Japan’s Mitsui in building cranes on American soil.

Analysts at Alphaliner, a container shipping consultancy, believe that the US government’s initial aim to replace all Chinese-made cranes in the country’s ports by newbuilt cranes within a fairly short period appears unrealistic.
Potentially, the new legislation could be watered down after the presidential elections, so that Chinese-made equipment must be replaced at the end of its economic lifetime, which could be around 2040 for some of the recently-installed cranes,” Alphaliner suggested in its latest weekly report.

In semi-automated and in manual terminals mathematics gives way to human minds and human behaviour. Predictability of task duration is not possible, as each human in the chain operates at slightly different, untunable speed. Telling each human in this loop to slow down or to accelerate is too complex, too labour intensive, and too inefficient.
