“Master of Steam or Motor Vessels of not more than 1600 Gross Tons” Does this mean a Master any tonnage up to 1600, i.e., Master 500GRT?
I would say YES,
I will second that.
which actually does mean a vessel of exactly 1600 tons (not 1599 like so many vessels) but it can’t be sail powered! I always wondered how one could get unlimited tonnage sail added to their license…now that would be a rare one!
Also does it now automatically get the 3000ITC tonnage as well nowdays since STCW has no 1600ton license?
Really? You have to ask this question?

Now that you mention it…that was a pretty doofuslike question to ask! I completely missed a fabulous chance to use my pointy stick. Damned, I must be getting dementia or something but I forgot what it was.
If we had all been thinking we could have come up with some 4 paragraph explanation that would have echoed forever n the annals of wild goose chases. Wild Geese Chases? Wild Geese Chase?
To get unlimited tonnage sail on your license you must ship on aux sail vessels above 1600 tons of which there are only a handful. Conundrum.
All my licenses including my present chief mates/1600 master license have steam motor and auxiliary sail because I did - and continue to - sail on “the big rigs” in my free time.
When my UL master comes through in a few months it will be a"true" master mariners license and, according to a couple old salts who have it, one of the very few issued by the USCG.
it’s really only good for sailing the big rigs/tall ships where the $$ is poor but the seamanship and female companionship are remarkable.

Luckily for me the female companionship I have is remarkable and I have been lucky enough to be married to her and she has stuck with me for 27 years.

Unlimited master in a “few months” huh? Pretty amazing since you just got your chiefs last fall and are sailing as third. Where did you get your documentation, Jay Heater?
