OSG signs with AMO

I love me some propaganda as much as much as I love two brand new accounts with almost the same user name astroturfing gcaptain, but God damn how about some subtly, guys? You know what’s really striking here? AMO is the only union not out here dancing for new members. That should say something about how these negotiations are going behind closed doors. OSG already has AMO representation, it would make a lot of sense to expand that to the tanker fleet. For the AMO folks, with higher paying jobs joining the union, a rising tide can float all boats.

If you’re not waiting in the hall that means waiting on the ship, right? How many Deck officer PIC’s do you have over there? AMO is a tanker union for the most part and they can’t even find PICs right now to fill 3rd spots. You really think you’re going to have someone wander into the hall, then voluntarily go to foreign when there are all these coastwise jobs? Or are they just going to direct hire at which point, who needs the union anyway…

Heaven forbid someone is “Stuck” taking their family on a Florida Vacation… And unless you’re spending months trying to get your upgrade classes which Calhoun rarely offers anyway, This is a dumb argument given it’s maybe a week every 5 years. This isn’t an argument, just genuinely trying to compare notes, to the other unions let non-students stay on campus? It’s like $70 a day to bring family with you to the star center when hotels in the area are well over 150/night.

Past performance is not an indicator of future success. Pensions go tits up. And your members are going to be left out in the cold just like they were at AMO, USW, United Airlines, Bethlehem steel ( I could go on). I could try and bet that the MEBA pension can hold it together for another 20 years, or, I get paid enough I can save and retire on my own. We are in a volatile industry that according to Johnny K is moments away from being washed away, blown away, or outsourced on any given day. What if Automation, regulation, or this trend of the American merchant fleet shrinking continues and the pension becomes top heavy?

Jesus Christ there is no way this is sustainable when you put it like that. Social Security is hanging on by a thread and that’s pennies compared to 250k a year per member. For engineers how has no one done this math? No wonder you’re fighting for new work like this, maybe you did do the math and you see you need more people.
