Thanks for posting this.
If you’re new- definitely check into this- lots of seatime, lots of training, job security, and -as a former AB of mine said- “you’ll see the world man!”
Plus- you’re out a long time. Put your stuff in storage so you don’t have to pay rent, do your overtiime, bank your checks- and you’ll come home with a GOOD amount of money.

Why doesn’t MSC advertise on gCaptain? They have huge ads up at Promariner and a bunch of the other maritime rags.
I’m sure it’s not from lack of trying on Mike’s part… so you MSC guys should put the question up to your command. Just a thought.
CMjeff-
Good point.
Everyone- please mention gcaptain if you do apply. Mikey, John and the others here put a lot of work/money in to keep the forum free. Gaining MSC as an advertiser would definitely help out!
Also- I’m curious how gcaptain compares to the others as far as circulation. If it’s comparable or greater- should be an easy sell.
My application is in the mail.
I heard that you can not park your car at MSC. Do they ever fly you out to pick up your ship or is it all stateside pickup. I am thinking it is going to be a pain to fly to Norfolk and take a cab to MSC but I can see the problem of having everybody’s car in the parking lot for months on end.
You only have to worry about it the first time. Once you’re hired ALL travel expenses are reimbursed, cab’s to and from the airport included. They fly you to wherever your ship is.

found the civmar promotion list for ‘ordinary seaman advancement program’- what were they being promoted FROM? Isnt that a hiring grade?
Maybe from regular ordinary seaman to the advancement program?

There’s no comparison. We do about 6 times the traffic of the “leading” online publications, Maritime Reporter, Professional Mariner, Workboat, Maritime Executive, Marine Log, Maritime Employment, you name it. Shit we even crush Lloyd’s List and Tradewinds, at least in the States. Thanks to you guys of course!
Btw, it is a huge help to reference us when dealing with companies, people simply just don’t believe it til they see it. You can also give us a testimonial at http://gcaptain.com/forum/gcaptain/7465-essay-contest-5-minutes-time.html#post56387. I don’t know why John called it an essay, it’s not an essay, it’s a testimonial.
just submitted my package application today, and the position I was applying for was for the Assistant Store Keeper, I had a few questions and would really appreciate if any of you can assist me on it.

With me being a former Veteran of the armed forces, and I am currently a DOD Civilian and also have a secret clearance already as that is required for my current job, how long does it take until you get a reply back on whether or not you got the job offer?
-
Is it even worth attending the job fairs that MSC have? I was thinking of attending one even though I have already submitted my application package along with all the required documents. would it be worth to talk to a recruiter face to face?
-
My last question that I have is if you are sailing out of Norfolk Virginia what are the ports that you go too and to which paticular countries? And how about for the west coast?
I would really appreciate any information.
Mr. International
As far as the Veteran status goes, you should do fine and I would imagine the wait for security clearance would be considerably less than someone not already in the system. I am a Veteran and had some type of security clearance and when I applied for my TWIC card I was told 4 to 6 weeks. I had it in hand 8 days after the application.
I have read a few post her regarding the MSC job fairs and attending one. I would not recommend it because there appears to be a breakdown in the information from the recruiters and the individuals responsible for the hiring.
As far as the ports go, unknown. I would let it be a surprise haha.
There are many more fellas on here that would be much more familiar with the answers to your questions.

Do u no if entry-level is gonna open up soon?? I’ve been tryin for monthz to get into MSC…
Thanks for the information Madvac regarding the MSC job fairs, I could imagine that there must probably be a breakdown in the information, when I call the recruiters and ask them a specific questions at times the answers are not really valid. I gotten more information in this forum.
Ports unknown wow lol
It doesn’t get any more “entry level” than OS.
How often does this program open up? I’m really interested in it… seems like the last one they had was on the 31st of October though.
