OICNW. Whats the difference

Im pretty good at figuring these things out on my own however this one has me stumped. I recently submitted the remainder of my OICNW package (cel nav portion) to the NMC. I curently hold a Second Mate limmited 3000grt NC, ect ect. My previous OICNW had the same limmitations. When they issued my new docs all limmitations were removed from my OICNW but remain on my 2nd mate. Two questions, is my OICNW now covering any waters and any tonnage and what am I sailing under? My OICNW or my 2nd nc? Also how do I now get my 2nd moved to oceans? Do I need to go test again for it? By again I mean I have taken the cel nav course for my masters upgrade just need to pass the crossover test to turn that in. Thanks in advance for the answers.

To my understanding all unlimited licenses, even with restrictions, has to be taken at the Rec. The 1600 masters ocean’s can be obtained by taking the course. I’m in the same boat. I have ocean’s on my 1600 masters but taking my ocean’s on my 2nd mate at the REC. Now my 2nd mate is still NC.

I have no clue about the OICNW. Mine is on my license.

To the best of my knowledge you’d have to take the Oceans test at the REC to get that added to an equivalent NC license. Also you’d be sailing on both. I’m pretty sure you have to have both the Unlimited license and the OICNW to be compliant if you’re on that type of vessel.

I don’t disagree with what you are saying however since they have issued my OICNW with no restrictions I have to wonder.

The OICNW STCW endorsement will not have a limitation unless it is less than 500GT. The USA is probably one of the only countries with limited “unlimited” licenses therefore the STCW does not directly correspond. Your STCW endorsement reads as unlimited but you are limited by your national endorsement (license).

They no longer put non STCW compliant limitations on STCW endorsements. You are still limited by your national license, at least when sailing on a US documented vessel.

That was my first thought. Thanks for the confirmation.
