New cable layers for a booming market:

Singapore's Megamas reveals plans for two cable ship newbuilds - Splash247

A shortage of cable layers is expected over the decade on the back of the growing offshore wind sector and aging fleet in the submarine cable industry. Cabling specialists have already moved to secure additional tonnage. France’s Nexans booked a large DP3 cable layer at Ulstein for delivery in 2026. Italy’s Prysmian is building a ship at Vard for delivery in 2025, while Danish cable maker NKT plans to have a newbuild ready by 2027.

VESSEL REVIEW | MHO Fast & MHO Furious – Trimaran crewboats to be...

The newbuilds are notable for utilising a lightweight surface effect ship (SES) trimaran design, which was developed to achieve higher speeds and greater fuel economy compared to a conventional-hulled crewboat. Specifically, the new crewboats are designed to be capable of service speeds of between 38 and 40 knots and a top speed of just under 50 knots, hence the selection of the names MHO Fast and MHO Furious .

CSOV IWS Skywalker Delivered

The hybrid-powered vessels will be among the first vessels in the industry capable of zero-emission operations. IWS noted the vessels have several “industry firsts”, such as the largest battery packs in the industry with solar panels for additional charging, and a novel hull and propulsion design that increases operability and reduces emissions. The vessels are the first in the industry to have the “DNV SILENT” notation, which focuses on minimizing the impact on marine life below water.
