Anybody in need of a Drillship?:

The “Muelle Reina Sophia” (“Queen Sophia Pier”) in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, Spain, is the well-known resting and waiting place for big drillships in Western Europe. In mid-December 2023 in all six of these monster ships gathered at the “Reine Sophia Deepwater Quayside”, the pier that was in 2021 lengthened by another 400 metres and now is almost two kilometres long. The pier accommodated NOBLE FAYE KOZACK, ENSCO DS-11, VALARIS DS-7 and VALARIS DS-12, as well as PACIFIC MELTEM and PACIFIC SIROCCO. All of them waiting for new employment - some just a few days, but some of them rest there for several months.

The pier in Gran Canaria is located in the Atlantic Ocean and therefore it offers for the customers there ideal conditions - that is deep water, remoteness of any touristic ambitions that predominate elsewhere in Las Palmas and, before all, political stability. So it is not only in respect of new consignments a strategically perfect spot for the ships and their companies but also for e.g. replenishment of fuel, food and other supplies or for crew change and disposals. And of course for repairs since shipyards and other workshops are located in direct vicinity.

One of the short-time guest at the Muelle Reina Sophia in December was the drillship VALARIS DS-12 which, according to AIS, entered port on December 11 and left again already on December 20. In the afternoon of that day the 235 metres long and 45 metres wide monster vessel cast off moorings, was assisted off the quay by two tugboats and set sail to Abu Qir (Abukir) near Alexandria at the coast of the Mediterranean Sea in Egypt via Gibraltar. The vessel left Las Palmas under own power with a speed of around nine knots. ETA Abu Qir is in the beginning of 2024.

She was “ship of the Year” in 2004.
Two sister ships were also built, the “Viking Lady” and "“Viking Queen”.

Still in operation in the Barents Sea.

I know somebody will ask, “how do they handle cargo at a rig or platform”?
Here is how:

Here is an offshore vessel that some here may be familiar with, both personally and from the news:
