“With a focus on functionality and efficiency, this design provides flexibility to perform tasks within different offshore segments, such as conventional platform supply service, light construction work, geoseismic and offshore wind,” the designer said.

Anybody in need of a Drillship?:
The “Muelle Reina Sophia” (“Queen Sophia Pier”) in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, Spain, is the well-known resting and waiting place for big drillships in Western Europe. In mid-December 2023 in all six of these monster ships gathered at the “Reine Sophia Deepwater Quayside”, the pier that was in 2021 lengthened by another 400 metres and now is almost two kilometres long. The pier accommodated NOBLE FAYE KOZACK, ENSCO DS-11, VALARIS DS-7 and VALARIS DS-12, as well as PACIFIC MELTEM and PACIFIC SIROCCO. All of them waiting for new employment - some just a few days, but some of them rest there for several months.
The pier in Gran Canaria is located in the Atlantic Ocean and therefore it offers for the customers there ideal conditions - that is deep water, remoteness of any touristic ambitions that predominate elsewhere in Las Palmas and, before all, political stability. So it is not only in respect of new consignments a strategically perfect spot for the ships and their companies but also for e.g. replenishment of fuel, food and other supplies or for crew change and disposals. And of course for repairs since shipyards and other workshops are located in direct vicinity.
One of the short-time guest at the Muelle Reina Sophia in December was the drillship VALARIS DS-12 which, according to AIS, entered port on December 11 and left again already on December 20. In the afternoon of that day the 235 metres long and 45 metres wide monster vessel cast off moorings, was assisted off the quay by two tugboats and set sail to Abu Qir (Abukir) near Alexandria at the coast of the Mediterranean Sea in Egypt via Gibraltar. The vessel left Las Palmas under own power with a speed of around nine knots. ETA Abu Qir is in the beginning of 2024.

A different looking PSV, Viking Avant, blt. 2004:
UNTRADITIONAL: Supply vessels should not look like normal freighters. But it turns out that it has great advantages: Photo: Harald M. Valderhaug
Originally, Viking Avant was a pure supply ship, but Statoil wanted the ship to also only be used in rescue operations, as well as part of the oil spill response in the Baret Sea. Therefore, the ship was equipped with a trawl slip in the stern of the vessel where there is a large rescue boat.
Furthermore, the ship has been upgraded with a towing winch, with a capacity of 125 tonnes. On board there is also full equipment for oil protection with lances and skimmers and other emergency equipment to remove oil from the sea surface.
She was “ship of the Year” in 2004.
Two sister ships were also built, the “Viking Lady” and "“Viking Queen”.
Still in operation in the Barents Sea.
I know somebody will ask, “how do they handle cargo at a rig or platform”?
Here is how:
Here is an offshore vessel that some here may be familiar with, both personally and from the news:
MV Ocean Intervention III SSCV – DP II Former “Island Ranger” (Photo: Isdland Offshore)
She is now up for sale on completion of her present assignment in Angola.
From Island Offshore:
A NEW ERA FOR OCEAN INTERVENTION III
The Island Offshore vessel Ocean Intervention III (OI3) is now out of contract after 17 years for the same customer! It is unusually long.
Built at Kleven Verft in 2005 as building 304, she was christened Island Ranger with Dionne Chouest as godmother. At the time, the project was a particularly welcome addition to the local shipyard, which was experiencing difficult times. Between families with solid roots in the maritime industry, a solution was found that could realize the project.
After a year as a supply vessel for Hydro, the stage was set for conversion at Myklebust Verft in 2007, and in connection with the contract with Oceaneering, the supply boat Island Ranger became the construction vessel Ocean Intervention III.
Now expected work in the Gulf of Mexico, where the ship, among other things, took part in extinguishing and rescue work after the terrible Macondo accident. After five years, the trip across the Atlantic was again to work in Angola; in what would prove to last twelve years. In total, OI3 has worked for the same customer for a total of seventeen years. That is impressive!
It is always sad to sell a ship, and especially this ship. In many ways, OI3 symbolizes the history and strategy of Island Offshore. Locally built ship, which was later rebuilt for a new market and customer based on what has become a particularly long-term and good collaboration, says Tommy Walaunet, managing director of Island Offshore.
We are grateful to everyone who has had their work on board and resolved this in an outstanding manner. Now the time had come to part ways with this ship, at the same time that the sale gives Island Offshore opportunities to finance further investment.
OI3 is now in new hands, and was handed over to new owners this week. OI3 remains in service outside the African continent.
