NONTRADITIONAL Degree in Maritime Transportation

Even possible without attending a Maritime Academy?

University of Phoenix for Marine Professionals anyone?

You can get degrees for everything else, is this just a pipedream?

Thats a good question! I have never heard of any schools offering this type of program, but I was just thinking about it the other day.

I think PMI/Mitags is about as close as you can get. I’m hoping someone will prove me wrong though!

Don’t know if we quailify - but I bet we’d have pretty good argument…

Plus no book to buy! That saves you several thousand right there, and at $250 an hour that’s about normal for colleges these days.

Maybe someday.

There are several schools that offer associate degrees in marine transportation and also marine engineering. The first one that comes to mind is the SIU school in Piney Point in league with St Mary’s College.

I know this is a 3 year old topic but am going through this program now and want to share with folks who may not want to go through the Merchant Marine Academy to obtain a degree in the Maritime Industry.

I’m knocking out my general classes at San Diego City Community College and taking maritime professional courses through the Maritime Institution (Coast Guard Approved). They transfer your credits over and you’ll earn your Associates of Applied Science (AAS) in Marine Transportation. Not for everyone but an alternate route to obtaining a degree if that’s your goal. Very beneficial for Vets because you can use your G.I Bill/ Post 911 to pay for everything.
