No Great Whiskers

I’m reading the investigation report for the collision between Tritonica and Roonagh Head that killed 33 guys in 1963 on the Saint Lawrence River. So far, it’s easy to understand what happened (even though all the units are Completely Archaic :P). But I tripped up on a term that I don’t know and can’t find on the Internet.

There was fog that night and “The Master was unable to estimate visibility at that time but said that there were “no great whiskers on the foremast”.”

Anyone know what this means?

Whiskers, coming off the running lights in the fog. First sign of fog on a dark night,

Carl Sanburg told me that fog has little cat feet, but no one ever mentioned the whiskers.
