I’m a newly hired Green Horn to the GOM, I have AB unlimited and a 100 ton masters. I’m looking for tips on things to do and things not to do on my first few hitches. My experience is all on the east coast and western Car. Any advice from all you old salts and unlimited masters out there would be great. I’m newly out of the Corps and will be taking all my hard experience from my time in service and starting up with a my new career
dont show up late and dont piss off the Captain. or the CM. or the bos’n. you didnt say what kind of vessel you will be on so thats pretty much the short and long of what I can offer.
no pointy stick but wondering how did you get your tickets from the Marine Corps?
regarding your questions, just go to work, work hard, stay very quiet and learn everything you can about your new job from the old hands
first time ive ever seen c. captain enter a thread started by a new guy without guns blazing.
And don’t cry about lack of cell phone service

As I grow older, I grow mellower and a bit smellier as well…

Where I come from, one time is late. 10 minutes early is on time

In fact, put that cell in “airplane” mode unless you want it to hunt around and latch on to every g.d. offshore cell tower out there and you get a huuuuuge bill! Surprise! (PS, this is also true for the NW, near Canada lol)

sorry I meant to add that information, I got picked up by an up and coming off shore services company in the GOM, so i’m told i’ll be on a supply boat. Not wanting to drop names they are publicly traded and making waves in the business from what I’ve read about them. Thank you for the advice

Great question, I did spend a few weeks ship board but my sea time came prior to my enlistment and I joined the corps as a 50 ton master and upgraded to 100 shortly after getting out. I recently made the move to AB unlimited to get a better job. The GI bill paided for my RNFPW assesments, tankerman, STCW renewal, and AB schooling. Thanks for the advice
Keep your ears open. And when you see some ridiculous stuff, keep your mouth shut and quietly ask someone after the fact about what happened.
Thanks for your service. Now, Eyes open , mouth shut!
Work hard, listen, and avoid saying “I know” when people are trying to explain something to you!!
You will have to leave your feelings at home too! But you already knew that!!
Good luck!!
Have good work ethics. You might hear “your making us look bad”! Most of the time that is the one who works hard to avoid work. Take pride in what you do! If you see something that needs to be done, ask officer if you can do it. Don’t wait to be asked to do it. Show initiative.
I say to a new guy, always be tinkering with something stupid, or at least make it look that way. Clean out a locker and organize it, wipe dust off fire extinguishers when the capt walks by, keep a spray bottle of cleaner and a rag handy so you can always look busy. Always ask the engineers if they need a hand with anything. But when the guys are sitting around doing nothing don’t be afraid to join them for a few. Last to join, first to get up and get back to work.
