Starting August 30, 2012, if you hold a TWIC that expires on or before December 31, 2014 and you are a U.S. citizen or U.S. national you will be able to replace your expiring TWIC with a 3- year Extended Expiration Date (EED) TWIC.
Benefits of the EED TWIC for eligible TWIC holders:
Replacement TWICs can be obtained in three simple steps:
Call the TWIC Help Desk at 1-866-347-8942 (Mon–Fri, 8AM to 10PM Eastern) to confirm your eligibility.
Pay a $60 card replacement fee by credit card (instructions for payment by check are below).
Exchange your current TWIC for your new replacement EED TWIC at a TWIC Enrollment Center of your choice.
Note: You are required to turn in your current TWIC when receiving your new TWIC.
Obtaining an EED TWIC to replace your expiring card is an option and is not required. You may instead obtain a new standard 5-year renewal card through the normal, full enrollment process. The full 5-year card renewal process requires two visits to an enrollment center and payment of the $129.75 fee.
I called them on Aug 30th and odered my 3 year renewal, I was on the phone about ten minutes, my CC was promptly charges $60 and I was told to pick it up at the office I chose in ten days. All smooth so far. Staytuned…

That would be fine for folks with MMCs. Most TWICs are issued to truck drivers and other shoreside folks (Iike surveyors) for port access. I agree that for folks WITH MMCs, it would be better, but that would mean crossing departmental lines and that just might eliminate a federal employee or two.

The TWIC has been since it’s inception a gift for Lockheed. Some of the USCG’s functions have also now been turned over to “private” business.
The TWIC though is an especially egregious ineffective corporate boondoggle payed for by the US taxpayers and the people required to have it.

We don’t require this, but schools are not prohibited from doing this if they want to.

How true. Someone posted a link a whle back abt some KY congressman worm (Corbin, KY)with a big interest in the TWIC program and making it as complicated and expensive as possible. And except for making my license valid, I have never seen it used or accepted for any other purpose. Every port I visit needs their own special ID or pass, all issued at great inconvenience,

I received an email yesterday reporting that my TWIC was ready for pick-up and I should go to their website and schedule a pick up appointment. I was issued a 15 min appt. for next week…
I use my TWIC regularly at the airport as ID, and the looks I got the first year or two were priceless. Countless times, the TSO had to call over a supervisor to see if it was an acceptable form of ID. I always tell them to flip it over and look who issues the thing…TSA.
Most finally get it now and the TWIC is listed on their website as acceptable ID.
That is, until the newest, latest greatest ID comes out…whatever that will be. Oh, there will be one. Security is a big racket!

I arrived for my appointment in Tacoma 10 mins early and they took me then as I was the only customer. I handed in my old TWIC, ran my PIN 3 times and had my index finger print checked. I was out of there in about 4 mins.
I was instructed to not keep the TWIC in my wallet and was given a hard plastic frame suitable for attaching a lanyard for hanging around ones neck. (no lanyard was given).
Happy TWIC shoppng to the rest of ya…
So i call the stupid phone number. The TSA told me that I could not renew because it was outside of 4 months to the cards expiration. When I told them that I had to go to sea and would not be back they they said uummm…uuhhhhhh…ummmmm, ahhhh, ok I guess I can do it.
So they take my info and say hold on while I transfer you to the payment section. After waiting 30 mins, I finally go to the stupid website that the recording kept telling me to go to if " You don’t want to wait".
So I fill out everything and it then asks for a user name and password…Huh? Ok, so i apply and it tells me that I already have one. OK. so I go to the sign in page and click the “forgot username and password?” link. After filling out another form, it asks me 2 secret questions. They are very clear and simple, with only one correct answer. First school and first dog. i use these all the time and there is no question. Well, the computer says they are wrong. Maybe because i never entered them into their system before? I dont know, but now Im back on the phone for 70 mins!
This is enough for a man to go “Dorner” on the system. So Im home for my 33% of my life, and this is how I have to spend it? If it was my license or something i could understand, but all this for nothing? Not to mention the 4 hour drive to the twic office and the nightmare 3 months I waited initially 5 years ago.
Be advised it is very difficult to understand the people on the phone. The call center appears to be located in the depths of an inner city where English is not a requirement to work there. I am 3 for 3 on on that front. In 3 calls I said excuse me at least 24 times.
