why does it need to be official of its used wherever it’s advantageous? Who gives a fuck (besides you)?
By the way, I thought you were done with this place. Why deal with us imperial system loving fools?

It’s quiet times during the holidays, so to irritate you imperial loving fools seams like a good pastime.
I found a site with a suitable name for this discussion where the resistance of some (most??) Americans to fully adapt the metric system is explained in simple terms: http://www.stuffyoushouldknow.com/blog/its-the-science-dummy-why-americans-hate-the-metric-system/
It appears that the Metric Conversion Act of 1975, which was the first attempt to create an official system of measurement for the US, was cancelled by President Reagan in 1982 because he found it too complicated to learn anything new at his age.
Apparently most Americans still find it too difficult??

I don’t think that it is difficult to learn. In fact, it is likely easier for kids and older folk because it is based on the power of 10. The conversion from imperial to metric is where the difficulty comes.
On a related note, the thing that pisses me off about the metric system is when they come to weigh things. They seem to measure in units of MASS instead of FORCE.
no, we learn both in decent school systems. Any college or university uses it nearly exclusively in science/math/physics, nearly any academic, scientific, medical etc etc uses metric. That’s what I’m trying to tell you, dummy.

Force = newton (N)
Mass = kilogram (kg)
84 kg * 9.8322 m/s2 = 825.9048 newton on the North Pole
84 kg * 9.7803 m/s2 = 821.5452 newton on the Equator
It’s easier to use my Mass when I’m talking about my weight.
But it’s a silly discussion because the Imperial units are based on IS units. And why should we care that the Americans are making things difficult for themselves. Stupid but whatever floats your boat.

Why two when one is superior? It would simplify the learning process, even for dummies that think the metric system is difficult because they convert everything back to imperial units to be able to visualize what it means.
Nobody here on the Forum does that of cause.
yes we can do 1/2 or 3/8 of the watch in imperial time too. Funny the US was the first country to have decimal currency, but we’re backwards goons somehow. Why don’t we have metric time, too? Didn’t someone try for a ten hour day for that reason?
We do have the 24 hr. day. No AM/PM to cause confusion.
People really are stupid. Do you know how expensive it would be to convert everything? Road signs, car’s instrument panels, pumps… it does not happen over night. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

Good question; what would it cost to change vs. what it costs to hang on to a system made for a VERY different world??
According to many who have posted here the metric system is already widely used, taught and understood in the US so the cost of making it the only system in official use may not be that high. The saving from having two parallel system may be more, since the need to have two sets of tools, teaching two systems etc.
The cost of accidents that happens because of wrongly converting or understanding the figures that is used or presented cannot easily be determined in terms of dollars, or in lifs.
Road signs: There is an International Standard for those to: http://www.vectorforall.com/tag/highway/
But USA is not fully compliant: https://www.quora.com/Why-do-US-regulatory-traffic-signs-have-more-text-instead-of-symbols
Maybe it would be time to change that to when you are at it? It is confusing for foreigners driving in the US and v.v. to have two different system of signage.
I understand that most cars already have dual system instrumentation. (Mph-Km/h, Gal/Ltrs.)
If you could cut out one set of numbers it would be a SAVING not a cost and the possibilities of misunderstandings would be reduced.
Pumps?? I didn’t know that pumps cared whether they pump in imperial or metric units.
Hey boy wonder, putting up speed limit signs with both speeds still costs money and when you pump something in gallons, it doesn’t just switch to a metric read out.

Yes it does, if you pump 10 gallons into a fuel tank it will show 37.85 liter if the fuel gauge measures in liter and I’m pretty sure you have automatic cut-off on the fuel pumps, it was after all invented in USA.
And with a digital display you could switch between metric and imperial if you are extra slow.

Why the Fuck does someone that DOES NOT Live here care what system we choose to use! It pisses me off when people want to knock or change the way we do things when they have little to no connection to the U.S. I am sure that what ever Country you are from is PERFECT in every way.
Why don’t you post where you live (if you have done so already please do it again) so we can discuss how great it is and how there is nothing that could be improved. Also, why do you continue posting on a (for the most part) U.S. based Forum? Maybe you should start your own Forum and base it on how things are done in your part of the world.
The U.S. is one of the few Countries where you can move here and still act as you did in your Home Land. I am sure that if I moved to your Country and Few the American Flag everywhere there would be NO problem.
Sorry for the rant but these are my feelings and if you don’t like it don’t read or reply.
I agree tugs!
Almost anything made today is all metric. Even domestic cars etc. the shit we export is metric. Why give a fuck? I’ve said time and time again, if anything, we are better knowing two systems than one.

It also exercises our brain thinking in eights, quarters, thousandths, halves. . . . let alone pints and gallons. . . . and pecks. . . .miles and furlongs. . .
I live here and have thought our continued use of the imperial system was rather foolish.

Ombugge is a Norwegian living in Singapore, and yes we are perfect in every way. And it’s funny how you react with anger, it’s a international forum. Just because c.captain has scared away almost everyone doesn’t make it a exclusive US forum.
