I was surprised when I first logged in, but I like it!

Mobile device friendly I like it so far.

keep up the fine work you mugs and tell John to post more often…he is silent as a tomb here!

Looks good.

Is the ability to comment on stories gone for good in lieu of advertising links?

Personally do not like it at all. Too busy and not bandwidth friendly at all. Took 5 minutes to load the page on a crappy internet connection then have to scroll through too many pictures and junk to get to the headlines. Tried to read the article about the platform fire and got about halfway done before a stupid pop-up obscures the article wanting me to sign up for the newsletter. Waited several minutes for the pop-up to finish loading so I could “X” it out and finally just gave up. I guess I won’t be reading the news on the main page anymore.

The only issue I have with the site is every time I go to read an article the popup comes on the screen asking me to sign up for your news letter. The part that bothers me is I linked to the article from your news letter. Is there any way you can make that stop?

As mentioned by txwooley, it is a bit too busy. What bothers me most is the break between news items for showing job ads and forum posts. I visit mostly for the news and I think it is the same for most visitors. It would look less cluttered if you put jobs and forum posts on the sidebar in place of duplicate lists of news items. I think tags cloud and site search are more efficient for people to look for past posts on certain subjects. Hope that helps. I visit daily, so this site is pretty important to me. Thank you for your hard work, gcaptain.

Oh, one more thing. The newsletter signup. People generally hate pop ups, ok?:o

New lay looks good but as others have noticed it is a little slow on loading depending on the type of connection being used.

One question, now that you have the New Layout done, is there and chance to get the Android App working again?

I would recommend a low bandwidth version; N0AA just signed a new satellite contract and cut the bandwidth way back. UNOLS ships also tend to have limited internet. Lastly, pop-ups are a pain, especially given the low bandwidth. Otherwise looks nice!

I rarely log in using any browser including safari on my phone I’m always on the app. In the bottom right where it says more tap blog to got to the home page. I have yet to get the newsletter pop up.

I agree with the above about it being too busy. Us mariners are simple folk and I liked the common-sense linear display of articles before. This new set up makes me a bit cross-eyed. Also, keep in mind that a lot of us are reading this stuff on our phones, at work, with limited internet service, and often in the very few minutes we might have between tasks. Under those circumstances, a busy and confusing webpage only makes the task of reading it more convoluted. Apply what you know as Merchant Mariners to website design: K.I.S.S.!!!

I agree with the comment about the break between news items showing job postings, please slide them out to the side again

I can’t even get the new site to load on my iPhone, I get an error message about 5 times before Safari gives up. On the app now.

I think the homepage is too light on news.

I assume that most readers are most interested in news. If they don’t see that much, they might visit less. That means fewer eyeballs and lowers your ability to sell ads. You gotta make money.

What happened to the other thread? I’m trying to help but if our threads are going to get nuked what’s the point?

I cannot agree more. When any criticism of gCaptain’s management results in it being expunged smacks of a totalitarian regime in power. Hear our words gentlemen and allow us to express them! Fixing the problems would be nice as well.

btw, I am taking back my earlier praise for the changes until the problems to the forum are corrected. I will accept that there will not be a rollback but at least make the new forum work as it is supposed to. That can’t be too much to ask…can it?

.

I do not like the look or feel of the new site. Too gray. It has become more difficult to compose and post. This is not good considering that the volume and quality of posts has been way off lately.

I dont like the fact I have to be logged in to call up new posts. I rarely logged into the old forum, only to post something. I liked being able to call up the latest post read and get out.

I like the site overall though. I am not having any of the problems mentioned. Guess its because I never use any of the new updates and and security crap.

I’m getting tired of it myself. What’s up with all the deletions lately?
