New Online DP Basic/Induction course
The Dynamic Positioning Operators Handbook by David Bray, FNI.
REPLY $500 for a book? You’ve got to be kidding. The 5 day DP Induction courses can be taken for about $1,800. I’m sure that must be a very fine book, but hell will freeze over before I pay $500 (probably more with shipping) for any book. This is an outrageous rip off.

Can anyone recommend a DP book for under $100 (new or used)? Does anyone have left over books or materials from their DP Induction course?

I sent an email to Videotel asking about the price of their UNAPPROVED 8 hour online DP course. I bet that it will also be far far too much.

c.captain I see an opportunity here for you to write a successful book about DP. Perhaps titled: “Primer of Dynamic Positioning” — along the lines of Primer of Towing — that should sell for about $50.

I am not really sure where you got the $500 number. It is a Nautical Institute publication. If you go to the publications tab on their website you can open the publications catalog in PDF. You will see that the DP Operators Handbook is £25. That is about $40 at today’s exchange rate. Even of shipping is the cost of the book it is under $100 and well under $500.
Trust me, most people in the US and Europe would NOT consider spending four whole days in an introductory DP class at MPT, Kongsberg, or Beier Radio — to be “going to college.”

That’s why people were confused by use of the term “college.”
For a long time now we have identified an urgent requirement for a really top class reference book covering every aspect of DP in support of all types of offshore operations. It wasn’t until we were introduced to Captain David Bray, one of the world’s leading authorities on the subject, that this idea could become a reality. Now after over a years work this new book provides a unique and vital new source of reference for anyone who needs to know more about the design, installation, operation, repair or maintenance of DP systems aboard DSV’s, MDU’s shuttle tankers, multi-role semi-subs, pipe and flowline layers, rock dumpers, and survey vessels.

Has anyone here tried this yet? I am anxious to hear a report.

Found the book on the NI website. Thanks for your very helpful reply.

Whatever you do you will still need to spend 24hrs of class time in a NI accredited school to get your log book and very shortly you will need to be there to do your online exam as well.

I’m looking at some DP induction courses, and could not find your cost listed for 1800USD for the induction course. The ones I looked at are in Houston and are around 3,000 for the induction. Do you have a link? Thanks

Beier Radio.

It appears that with 2013 pricing the least expensive DP Induction course is at L-3 in Houston for $1850. Beier Radio in NOLA is $2,000. MPT in Fort Lauderdale is $2,500 Holland College in PEI is $2,650. Kongsberg in Houston is a bit more than that. Houston in NOLA is $3,000.

This is a list of ALL of the NI APPROVED courses. THis online class at the moment is simply a “DP for dummies” They are trying to get it approved by the NI but i highly doubt anything will come of it, atleast i hope not. http://www.nautinst.org/download.cfm?docid=159830B4-9C94-4B47-A387C93A1BB338AC

I bumped up the NI requirements for DP in an old thrread: DP Requirements.

Is there any additional benefits to take the Kongsberg course, outside of the reputation of the school and the fact that a LOT of equipment on ships is Kongsberg. From what I hear most of the newbuilds will be sporting Kongsberg too. I wouldn’t want to take the Beier course and then have to take another course with Kongsberg, unless it is for an advanced course later down the road.

My question is how much would this matter for just the induction course, and how much more knowledgable would one be having taken the Kongsberg DP induction course (houston or nola) ?

The basic course is going to be all about passing the exam so there wont be much hands on time left in the classroom anymore
