Need some help

Hi all. I have been trying to get my transcript of sea service and it has been a nightmare. My request was forwarded from St. Louis to PSC Arlington and when I contacted them, they claim they haven’t received it. The NMC told me to go to Direct Access request a SOCS but it appears that involves errors on a DD-214 (?). Has anyone encountered this? If so, please tell me what I need to do. The NMC also advised me that a certified history of assignments will do but I can’t seem to find where I need to go for that.

BTW, I am working towards getting my 100ton Master NC/200ton Mate so if anyone here has done that using their military sea time, I’d like to know how the time was evaluated. NMC informed me yesterday, they are awarding 70% instead of 60% toward military sea service.

Thanks

I did this in the 90s but the form they are looking for is the history of assignment. It’s page 5 of your service record or NAVPERS 1070/605

Some instruction for obtaining records are on this web page

http://www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/reference/milpersman/1000/1000General/Documents/1070-150.pdf

If your still active reserves you may be able to get it online. I know that when I did this it took some time but things may be easier in this day and age.

Like most things the USCG will have the final say on what credit they give you but if you did a few years in a engine or nav rating they will credit your time. I suggest you do some time as OS regardless. I did 6 month as a deckhand on a crew boat before I tested for the 100 ton. Not sure if your working already but this is a different world than what the USN prepares you for.

On another note I wasn’t even aware this world existed when I processed out. The navy told me I was qualified for very little jobs as a BM2. Luckily I stumbled into a job on a Graham crew boat with a captain that was prior Navy. He told me to use that sea time and get that license, but only after I knew what the f**k I was doing. He was a Good guy but didn’t baby anyone.

Good luck an I hope my info isn’t too outdated.

I JUST did this. I called the NMC and told them that I needed a copy of ALL Seatime on file. I was given a fax number. I went home, typed up a written request, faxed it an had it in my mailbox about 3 weeks later. This had nothing to do with military Seatime though. Hope this helps.

Disregard- I just realized your talking about DD forms. That’s what I get for not fully reading the post. Sorry.

thanks for sharing. i just got hired as a mate on a dinner cruiser in chicago and once i meet the recency requirement (90 days past 3 years) im eligible for that license. i hope it all works out and i can make a career of it but if something were to happen and i needed to move to something else, i would surely work on getting my AB and be careful how i mention to anyone i had a 100ton master license, could cause some bad blood between shipmates, haha.

thanks again

There are many ways to go up the hawsepipe and don’t worry about what othes think or say. I would get the AB regardless because sometimes that is the only thing available. I’m not sure how the new structure will work if they do get rid of the 500 ton but it may become the only way to advance. Thing to remember is get everything you can get, makes things easier in the long run.

I sent for a Sea Service letter as you did, and it took about three months to get one. Impatient, I sent off copies of my evaluations and my enlisted summary record (page 4?) along with anything else I thought useful to show my history of ship assignments and what I did on them. I sent in about 30 pages of records. The NMC approved me to test. So…if you have any of that from your service record, you may not need your letter.

You could also work with a credentialing specialist, there are several names that pop up when using the search function. I think Andy Hammond posts here.

Just take a job and get dirty. Things will open-up to you.

That’s nice, BMCSRetired.
I like how we cooperate on the forum.

Ok, I’ve read almost every post I can find with regard to Navy sea time. My license application has made it to the evaluator; who told me the documents I submitted for Navy sea time were not valid.

Does everyone have a Navy sea time example thAt was approved by the USCG.

Thanks

I suggest that you stop beating your head against the wall and hire a license consultant (former USCG evaluators). Several of them have been mentioned in various threads on gcaptain. If you google USCG license consultants, you should find some.
