I currently hold a 2nd Mate Unlimited and a 1600 Masters NC. I was just approved to test to Upgrade to Oceans. I’ll be taking modules 146 and 147.
My question is; Are the test for Masters and 2nd Mate the exact same?
I thought/think my NavGen will be 70 questions but Lapwares Practice tests have only 20 questions? Also MPTs 1 day prep course includes CFRs, ships biz, Deck Gen but the Lapware practice tests I got are strictly NavGen.
Forgive my poor post I’m on deck in Xiamen loading cargo but any clarification and info from anyone thats taken the upgrade would be appreciated.

Did you apply to upgrade both to Oceans? If so then the answer is yes, since you were only given those two modules.
Hawespiper - I just did this a couple of months ago but a little different. I went to an approved school to learn how to do the Celestrial and sent that into MMC and requested for my 1600t masters OC. At the same time requested to take the OC test for 2nd mate UL.
I had to take those two modules, not for sure though. I just looked for my paper work with what mods the told me I would have to take but couldn’t find it. Anyways I had to take two exams on 15 question exam with the Celestial stuff and another exam on Gen. Nav. ( I want to say it was 20 or 25 questions.)
I would think that if you pass the Unl. OC test it would carry over to the 1600T masters though. Mr. Cavo would be the person to ask or do what I do and just call MMC.
If you hadn’t already applied if say save your money and wait until you upgrade to Chief Mate and take the Oceans test then. That way you only test for Oceans once.
Yes, I applied to test for both licenses. I will not ever be testin for Chief Mate.
So you have a 2nd Mate u/l oceans but a 1600 NC?

No, he has 2M NC and 1600 ton Master NC.

Why not? Get everything you can…
Because they shut that door if I read it right for the OSV group. Hawes may not fall in that group though.

He already has his 2M so he should be grandfathered for his CM upgrade.
Why not? Get everything you can…
- I ain’t young
- Been an AB for 3 years, 2nd Mate is totally good enough for me
- I never want to go through all those classes and studyin again
- It takes a decade as 2nd Mate to maybe get a Chief Mate job with MMP, I’d be the oldest, new Chief Mate on record.
- They work way too much.
DOMESTIC/INTL ENDORSEMENT ???
Last week I recieved two seperate emails from NMC, one said my International endorsement was being evaluated, the other said my Domestic endorsement was being evaluated. I was only approved to test for my Domestic Endorsement (Oceans). I can’t get a straight answer on what happened to my International Endorsement. I called NMC from Guam and a supervisor told me since I already had my OICNW I didn’t need an International Endorsement. I emailed NMC for clarification and she tells me that endorsement is for sailing Internationally and I should check with my company to see what I need. I’m not kidding thats what the email from that stupid outsourcing place said.
I will request to speak with my evaluator to fully explain this to me but I won’t be done sailing til
mid December. So…in the interim can
someone please shed some light on this for me?
