I appreciate the answers. I guess what I need to know is what are the ratings called , for engineering positions and firefighting? Being in the Navy I know the rates. I don’t know what the Merchant equivalent is.
What license’s can I apply for in engineering? QMED (oiler), wiper, 3rd assistant? I’m not sure I know all the engineering rates.
Wiper is entry-level and automatic on your MMC along with OS and SD(FH).
QMED (most ratings) you can test for with 180 days sea-time as a wiper.
Wiper and QMED are endorsements, not a license.
DDE 4000 is the lowest level license that is useful, you need 720 days of sea-time.
You can/should apply for all of them.
After being evaluated they will tell you what you need to qualify.
On a different note:
Premier Pacific Seafoods
SS Ocean Phoenix
is looking for someone with steam experience.
Fishing Industry vessels do not always require MMC’s.
The OCEAN PHOENIX is the old OREGON MAIL/PRESIDENT KENNEDY. The first ship I sailed on was a sister, the PRESIDENT EISENHOWER back in the late 70’s. Interesting.
Nice talking with you today,mj, we both are steam men. You have enough time to sit for your 3rd A/E, Unlimited HP. It’s just a matter of jumping through all the hoops we talked about and hitting the books. Here’s the video I mentioned, a steam ship maneuvering out to sea, one day you will be on the throttles.
What would differ for a deck guy? One of my friends just got out of the Navy and was a QM3. I know he’ll need his records and DD-214. Im going to get him to take AB right away and submit it all at the same time. I guess he’ll need to get a worthless TWIC as well. Am I missing anything on the Navy side??
He either wants to work on tugs or be a mortician…

It boggles the mind, a deck hand or a mortician. Oh my goodness!!
Hey Deck’ees, am I missing something here. Don’t get pissed at me, I’m capable of much more than this lame reply.
To answer your question, Kenny, no. The same hoops applies.
Sweat-n-grease, good talk with you too. After I got off the phone with you I called the Nav recruiter & got the number to bumpers. Called them & I faxed them the info they needed and they can/will send me all my sea time.
I also spoke to my old sea daddy and if he needs to he will vouche for any in port steaming/ light offs when watches were stood.

My Father retired as an QMC and was able to test for 3rd Mate Unlimited. Most likely your friend could take BST, AFF, Med care, Radar, BRM, and do the same thing. His PQS as a helmsman should suffice for the RFPNW requirement on STCW. The OICNW Assessments might be the only issue and is something to discuss with the CG. A QM should have no problem with the test, the job translates perfectly.

You paint a rosey picture for any former QM3s. I seriously doubt a QM3 will get permission to test for 3rd mate, (or any mate). The jobs do translate but not “perfectly”, especially not WRT the USCG test wording and question subject areas. A QM3 is a RFPNW but almost never a OICNW. There is a forum member here name of “Shellback”, a former QM2 that was required to start from scratch, i.e. as an OS. PM him for his story.
If it were me I’d choose Mortician, it’s got to be a lot less hassle to get and stay certified.
Its a damn shame that some navy and coastie time doesnt count straight across. My own experiance, i got out of nav after 8 years as an os2, all time at sea, qualified as officer of the deck underway on a cruiser, years of sea time and most of that time and quals didnt count for squat. Damn shame
