Navy fires captain who sought help for virus-stricken ship

Does anyone really believe a man placed as CO of an aircraft carrier could possibly be this stupid as to do something so nakedly wrong??

I don’t.

Clearly there was more behind the scenes we don’t (ever) know. But an action like this must have been predicated by something glaringly wrong or ‘absent’ (such as quick action by Pentagon Admirals).

As in they have to follow orders. Its not a democracy. Civilian leadership sets policy. Comes out of that 5-sided building. That’s our system.

Most of these admirals were probably promoted by the last administration with congressional approval.

Funny he specifically mentioned the video of the cheering crew as the CO departed. I knew when I saw that video that big Navy had a big PR/morale problem on their hands. (In addition to the big medical problem).

Who among us has ever respected anyone who shows up and proceeds to badmouth the person who preceded them or has already left the ship? What a low class move that was

Not sure if any of the previous links in this thread had the actual letter the CO sent, but it’s here if anyone hasn’t seen it.

In reading the letter the CO sent out, one smart thing he did was tie what he was requesting to an existing Navy policy NAVADMIN 083/20

In other words, he’s saying that it’s not just my opinion that these measures need to be taken but in fact these measures are required to be taken in order to comply with this NAVADMIN instruction.

Classic tactic of sea lawyers the world over… if you’re not getting what you want, use their own policies against them.

An over 80% turnover in department heads in the last couple of years, many “acting heads” such as Modly, 170 positions with no nominee offered by the administration and you have disorganization and rule by nonprofessional sycophants led by someone with no experience leading an even medium size company much less a government for over 320 million people. Couple that with a complicit congress that lacks the courage to govern. Whatta you get? Chaos and disfunction.

Everyone can have all the opinions they want. I would even say he tried to do right by his crew, but he went about it the wrong way. He most likely knew what would happen. Probably expected it. I’m not judging him as a leader, but he broke the rules. If you let him jump the chain because he’s a good guy, when can you enforce the rules?

People in poverty throughout the world knows there’s such things as no-win situations. Children who live in bad environments learn quick that no win situations are real. The poor & minorities with limited or no resources know about no-win situations. The reason the case with this aircraft carrier captain goads at some of the American public is because they forget no-win situations exist, forgot how lose & how unfair the world really is.

From how I see it Captain Crozier had 2 options in his no-win situation:

Option 1. Use every means within the guidelines at his disposal to get his ship into a safe harbor to get the sick crew off. If he did that but was unsuccessful & crew died he would probably be sitting in front of Congress one day explaining why he let his crew die over red tape on a mission that was only routine. Be booted out of the military & be considered a loser by some. He would also likely have the deaths of the sailors on his conscience for the rest of his life.

Option 2. Do what he did & be booted out of the military & be considered a loser by some.

Both routes are shitty. Undermine order & discipline in the military chain of command that is vitally important or maybe let some sailors die for no reason at all except for following orders. There’s no right answer for this one. Just shitty options & opinions.

In a stunning reversal, Modly apologized to Crozier, his family and the Navy in a statement late Monday night.

“Let me be clear, I do not think Capt. Brett Crozier is naive or stupid,” Modly said, according to the statement released by the Navy. “I think, and always believed him to be the opposite.”

Yes he did but I get the feeling he felt he had no choice. Per this article:

"Capt. Brett Crozier of the USS Theodore Roosevelt may have been worried that Rear Adm. Stuart Baker, his immediate boss and the commander of the carrier strike group, would not have allowed him to send the warning letter to Navy leaders, according to the top Navy official who fired him as told to a Washington Post columnist.

Baker reportedly confirmed to Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly that Crozier’s instincts were correct: “He was right. I wouldn’t.”

They were about to get underway to God knows where for God knows how long and maybe he thought this was the last real chance to take life saving action.

Let’s say they headed for the Persian Gulf and by the time they got there they have 1500 cases on board with some fatalities and others critical… Where you gonna stop for help then?

Anyone who cites Business Insider should be relieved of command.

The port call had to happen in Vietnam and the Chinese took the opportunity to infect the crew. US reacted and publicly ousted their scapegoat. Now it’s recipe card to get rid of future officers in command.

Pretty solid tactic to say the least considering the costs involved and no real shots fired. Economic hitman style vs warfare.
