Murphy's Deck Officer's Study Guides for 500 Ton Master?

The Murphy books have had good reviews on this site. How are they for studying for the 500 Ton Master? Do they advise you which areas to study for the 500 Ton Master?

Any thoughts, suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated.

Many thanks!

I don’t know if you have already taken the test, but here is a quick run down on murphy books:
I used the Murphy books while sudying for my 500/1600 upgrade, and I found them very useful. I had the same question, as to specific areas for the 1600 grt are addressed. I called Capt. Murphy and spoke with him regarding this issue. I would say the answer is yes, it is a bit more complicated than that though. The best part of the books are that they are divided into all the questions on specific test, i.e. nav. gen., terrestial, etc. So, studying for a specific test is made easier, also of great help, was that each question had a reference and were to find the answer in that reference attached to the question. Each question does not specifically state, unlimited, 1600, 100 but the sections are grouped in such a way that after awhile you see what areas to study. Anyway, good luck, and remember once you start the testing you have 3 months to complete it, if you have trouble with a couple of the sections you can focus on those instead of the whole of the test. Capt.Mac - Thanks for the response. I now have the books, and agree that they are nicely organized. Book One has a list of which topics are tied to specific levels of testing, which is helpful. I’m using them for studying while I’m on the boat, along with software when I have internet access.

Ya it will be great if they both get active on this forum…
and share their exp. with gaming…

On a related note, if you could find someone who has a recent copy and ‘rent it’ from them that would be helpful.
In a galaxy a long long time ago, in a place far far away I used a set of Murphy’s books to study for my 1600. Luckily the guy I borrowed the books from had started a habit of going back to the books and highlighting the questions he recalled from the exam day. The second guy who used them did the same. I did also. So after three guys using the books, it became pretty obvious which sections (and where in each section) they were concentrating on specific exam topics. Unfortunately the owner passed away and his widow threw the books out! But this is an interesting way that a used set of Murphy’s books can be made even more useful.

I have a set of the 01-02 edition. Just got done studyin and testing for 1600t nc master. It’s nice that the stability q’s and some of the math for other subjects are worked out in the back, also, as previously stated, the q’s are segregated by sub topic. That said, i DEFINATELY overstudied. A good problem to have-if you have the time to waste.

Capt. Joe’s CD has great solutions to all the problems. Well worth the already very reasonable purchase price.

Good luck!

Do the CD’s come with the books??

They didn’t 5 years ago. I just printed out the solutions and put them in a binder. Google him and you can go to his web site.

And good luck to you.

I am curious if the Murphy books have the solutions worked out in them. I just received the whole 6 volume set at home but can’t look at them yet till my hitch is up.
