Good day to all, which is better to join…MEBA or MSC?
MSC of course!
If you want to be an indentured servant go to MSC. If you want equal time off and freedom go with MEBA. You will be a poor group 3&2 for 4-5 years but in 20 years you can retire with a pension or take a buyout at age 50. In addition to the pension, you can sock away your own 401K plus a company MPB ( 5-13% of your base pay). If you like dealing with useless office “desk sailing, msd floater crud” go MSC. Just remeber, the biggest turds float to the top of both MSC and MSD. Notice there is only a one letter difference.

Harsh, but accurate.
If you are hired by MSC you can(at least a few years ago) join MEBA and pay dues…then after 5 years you will make group 1 and can leave MSC to sail with MEBA.
I have not begun my career yet but I can’t imagine sticking with a frustrating organization for 20-30 years for the sake of a pension. A lot can happen in that time which could screw up your early retirement plan.
Better to go with a company that pays & treats you well .
MEBA is not frustrating organization. Its one of the last true unions out there. You have no clue what you’re talking about.
Good luck getting a pension now a days.
Well let me know when you find this company that is not frustrating to deal with, one that pays well and treats you well. I’d be curious, I never located one with all those qualities in my years of going sea.
