MSC Mixed Work Schedules

MSC is listing jobs with “mixed work schedules” but their website doesn’t explain what those are.

Can someone who’s worked with MSC explain?

I understand that this was MSCs attempt to match the commercial industry. I’ve been wondering how successful implementation of this has actually been. From the details on this page, the terms aren’t exactly attractive.

Once you are hired and complete new employee orientation, you will receive your first 4-month assignment. during that assignment you will work with your detailer to plan for time off upon completion or to schedule your next assignment. You are eligible to continue working up to 6 months a calendar year. If you want to work more than that you will need to convert to a full-time position.

This position type is ideal for the employees who are looking for better work life balance or do not want to commit to a standard 12 month full-time employment. When comparing this to the private sector, it is our hope that the employee feels like there is greater flexibility and they are able to have a more competitive rotation. However, there are some differences from typical employment. These positions are:

  • Not eligible to a recruitment or a retention bonus
  • only earn time towards retirement when in a pay status

That sounds like a good strategy to me. An opportunity for recently retired mariners looking to get some time on their licence before it expires or for mariners looking for a sector change who maybe wants to give it a try without committing or for those who want to scratch deep blue MSC off their bucket list? Thinking outside the box to fix crewing issues is a good idea.

If I remember correctly from previous discussions on here I think you also aren’t eligible for health insurance because you don’t work enough in a year.

Thats still isn’t that bad imo. Everyone who I know who truely retired early, to go home to sit on their butts, golf or hike all had spouses who worked who paid the insurance through their employers. Just guessing, but I can’t imagine those wives being too upset if the husbands took off for 4 months a year to add $40k-$60k to the household budget. Thats a better work schedule than a school teacher & pays about the same depending on the state. I’ll keep it in mind.

True, but I don’t think they’re targeting retirees. It looks like they’re targeting people that sail commercially that want to maintain the schedule. Even if I could afford to do it for what they pay I can’t afford to lose the benefits.

They will work themselves around to an even time schedule with full benefits eventually, once things get catastrophically bad enough. Other federal agencies who employ mariners have been doing it for decades.
