Ms. Caroline in collision

The CG really goes by what the SMS manual for the company says. If you’re found to be in violation of the SMS then you can have an article 6 investigation brought against you, and they can suspend or revoke you’re license of they feel its needed. And that goes for any violation of your companies SMS.

Technically you have a 360 degree view in the wheel house on a crew boat so 1 person can be sufficient lookout, but if you’re SMS says differently follow it.

Look fellows I’m with ya on the whole if ya hit something you didn’t have a proper lookout. But you also didn’t have a proper navigational watchmen either. What I’m stressing is it goes back to the competency of the master. Regardless if they make it a 2 person bridge watch or not, captains that fail to follow the rules and exercise caution will continue to be involved in accidents. More regulation is not the answer in this case. Oh and how many people were on the bridge of the cruise liner Costa Concordia when it ran aground ?

Well we know how many Captains were one board. 1and 1/5th

Yeah you right…lol

The definition is the Master’s/Watchstander’s call. If the Master is an incompetent boob or the guy on watch is a imbecile, you have two choices; stay or do something else.

People need to held accountable for their actions not adding more rules and definition. I promulgate my standing orders and stand the watch in the spirit and intent of the rules, not a list of situations and what to do. Stand the watch and if you are unsure, MAKE THE CALL. That’s why I get the extra money. I expect you to follow my 10 or 11 Standing Orders, do the right thing, and have confidence in your own abilities and mine. I will protect and support you. However, if you do not have the ability to trust and support me, then you should go somewhere else. . If you are worried about definitions, become a lawyer or go back to class.

I do not want some government organization or lawyer on my bridge thank-you very much. When they start paying for my groceries, clothing and housing then they can start standing watch with me.

You do not want some bureaucrat sitting at a desk defining everything in your life. We all know where that leads…

…and before the comments come back on our government and what is happening here, we still have the best system in the world. At least we have the option of voting ALL the bums out and starting over. We just have to grow the stones to do it.

If it is that bad here, go somewhere else. I see it all the time where I work now and feel sorry for the poor souls living there.

You are in charge. There are very few jobs like ours in the world today. You have the Rules, you have the license. Lead, follow, or get out of the way.

Anybody know what the name of the ship they ran into was?

This happened on their way back to port after making a supply run to our drilling rig. It was a great looking boat and will be again soon I’m sure. I hope all the injured crew are doing well.

I know this was 12 years ago. But if anyone was curious. There was a deckhand awake and on that night. He had been with the captain when they got suspicious of a fuel leak. He went to the engine room and searched under the deck plates for about 15 minutes. He found the leak and went back up to report to the captain. Captain asked him to draw a diagram of where the fuel was leaking. He grabbed some paper and started to draw. While drawing they crashed into the side of the 650 foot cargo ship. There was no broke neck but a collapsed lung, and torn shoulder on the deckhand. Captain was okay as was everyone else.
