Merchant Mariners WWII project
Both Norway (#3) and Sweden (#5) on the list was neutral nations at that time, yet they feature high on the list of both Rescue and vessels sunk.
I am surprised at the US rescues, since they don’t feature much in the list before or after this date.
It’s mostly due to two “hog islanders:” City of Flint and Independance Hall, neither of which survived the war. They each had one day where they saved a lot of people. City of Flint turns out to be important, and may answer the question about why we don’t hear much from the Americans for a while. She was captured by the Germans, they sailed her to Norway, the Norwegians said: we’re not having you, move along. They sailed her to Murmansk and tried to claim some legal right to take haven there. The Soviets said, we’re not having you either, they sailed back to Norway… It all turns out to be quite a production. In the end, she returned to service as an American ship, but the Americans encouraged their merchant fleet to change to flags of convienence to protect American neutrality while still running supplies to the Allies. So maybe they are being more cautious about responding to distress calls after the drama with City of Flint.

She did sink when a vessel loaded with explosives caught fire in Bergen: http://da2.uib.no/1944/hovedtekst.htm
But as you can read from her history, she got a new lease on life: http://www.gamlerogaland.no/index.php/historie

So don’t throw away the prescription for your glasses just yet.
I have been told that the Swedes invented magnetic mines and sold them to Germany.

I didn’t know that. I remember when we sailed from Africa to the North Sea, we had to degauss the hull before we got there, because apparently these wwII mines are still a hazard up there. I don’t know for sure, but I think they used the impressed cathodic system to do the degaussing… Does that sound likely? I think in WWII they were just dragging fat, electrified cables down the outsides of the hulls. I visited the Mercer, an American Built wooden minesweeper from that time, in Den Haague. The ship was closed to tourists because there was a meeting of Dutch WWII naval veterans doing their thing there. So I walked up the gangway anyway and explained myself. Those guys invited me on board and gave me my own tour. The Dutch are so lovable. A couple years later, I found myself living in the shipyard (now marina) where the Mercer was built.

In December the crew of Gimlé were saved by Rudolf, later Rudolf’s crew were saved by Biarritz. This week Biarritz’s passengers and crew were saved by Borgholm. There is a translated letter from one of Borholm’s engineers to his wife describing the horror of Biarritz’s sinkinghttp://www.warsailors.com/singleships/borgholm.html
Borgholm was a member of at least 100 convoys after this incident.

American ships are now formally forbidden from entering the war zone to preserve American neutrality.

Here is the short propaganda film that was made about the sinking of the lightship. It seems to be pretty accurate in the facts, except that one man actually was able to find shelter and lived.
Impressed Cathodic protection system was invented much earlier, but MAY have been a byproduct of the degaussing system invented in WWII.
