Tussand Tak. Does this mean that most ships have a dedicated degaussing system built into them?

The BBC (under pressure from the Royal Navy) restricts the reporting of merchant ship losses: the loss of a small ship can be mentioned once, the loss of a large ship can be mentioned twice.

1940.02.12 Wakama: Germany cargo scuttled

In October 1939, 299 British merchant sailors were captured by the Kriegsmarine from various vessels. *They we’re being held on the ship Altmark. The Royal Navy observed the Altmark take refuge in Norwegian waters in February, 1940. The Norwegians searched the Altmark, but didn’t find the prisoners. The Royal Navy demanded to be allowed to search the Altmark, but Norway refused. The navy chased the Altmark, anyway, and when she was grounded they forced their way on board and freed the men. The Almark was abandoned until Norway was conquered by Germany. *The Kriegsmarine refloated and renamed her.

Also this week: American volunteers arrived to fight for Finland in the Winter War.

The Altmark Incident in more details: http://militaryhistory.about.com/od/worldwari1/p/altmark-incident.htm
Norway was still neutral at this time. (Hard to believe when you see the number of neutral Norwegian ships listed as sunk, so far)

The significance of the Altmark Incident is largely hidden in the cloud of war and later events.
The British and French allies had been debating and planning to invade part of Norway and Sweden and to mine the Norwegian coast to stop the Germans access to iron ore from Kiruna: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plan_R_4

This plan was brought back into the discussion after the Altmark incident and was planned for 05. April 1940, later delayed until 08. April. It was cancelled by the German invasion of Norway 09. April, 1940.

If the British had invaded first it is unclear what would have happened. A British invasion would obviously HAVE to be resisted by the Norwegian armed forces, and an alliance with Germany would have been logical.
But more important, what would have happened to the large Norwegian fleet that was trading outside Norway, which was the third largest merchant fleet in the world at the time. Would they still have supported the British/Allied side, or would they have gone to the German side?

That fleet played a major roll in the war as it became an integral part of the allied supply chain world wide. The Norwegian merchant fleet lost 570 ships, (out of abt. 1100 total in 1940) and suffered nearly 4,000 seamen dead and about 6,000 sick or wounded.
Many would join the Norwegian Forces that was set up in Britain to fight the Germans, both in the air, on the ground and at sea.
Training camps were set up in England, Scotland and in Canada. (I found this article about the Canadian training camps: http://www.emb-norway.ca/norway_and_canada/Historical-ties/Norway-in-Canada-during-World-War-2/Norway-and-Canada-during-World-War-2/
What isn’t mention much about is the large number of Norwegian seaman that suffered from stress and mental problems after the war.

Many of them ended up staying abroad after the war and never returned to Norway. They shipped out from places like Liverpool, Antwerp, Rotterdam. Hamburg, Boston, New York and other major ports for Norwegian ships. Between ships it was a life of high spending and alcohol for the first week or two and living on credit and good will until the next job came around. Most would return to the same port, others would be more of a wanderer, staying in whichever port they signed off.

I agree. The Germans violated the neutrality by targeting Norwegian merchant ships and by sheltering the American ship City of Flint (taken as a war prize) and the Altmark (with prisoners aboard) in Norwegian waters. The British violated the neutrality by going in after the Altmark without permission. I guess the Norwegian inspectors probably knew about the prisoners, but hoped that by not finding them they could stay out of the war.

Britain, France, and the US were strongly interested in using Norway and Sweden to get supplies, troops, and equipment to Finland at this time, too. Sweden’s king decided not to allow it, probably for the same reason the Norwegians didn’t try to find the prisoners. His people badly wanted to help Finland. A primary school even collected money to buy Finland a fighter plane “as a gift from the children of Sweden.” The Soviets considered Sweden to be an ally in their “neutrality.”

In hindsight, it’s difficult to see why Scandinavian neutrality was considered to be safe, with the German attacks on Swedish ans Norwegian boats and the fall of the neutral Baltic counties as a recent example. On the other hand, the only other option is to declare war on Germany, which is a shit-sandwich no mater how you slice it.

The enigma machine was recovered by the British from scuttled uboat, during this week.

The Kreigsmarine lost 590 sailors and 2 ships to friendly fire because they didn’t tell the Luftwaffe about an exercise that they conducted after dark.
