Merchant Mariner Pay 2024 NEW

Have you looked into AMO? A lot of their contracts are even time, or at the very least, if you don’t mind bouncing around, you could make it even time.

When you say “3rd-Unlimited”, it implies an unlimited tonnage license. I would assume TDW boats would only require “Assistant Engineer -Limited, unlimited horsepower” which would be good on a vessel up to 1600 tons.

If that’s not the case, please specify.

I’d assume the boats that tdw have working in the GOM are over 1600 grt. The handful of new builds they had built right before the last downturn were big modern vessels. Maybe some of the gulfmark fleet that merged with them is under, but i doubt it. From what i’ve seen the market for those less than 1600 grt osvs is very spotty, and mostly worked by the smaller outfits.

With that speculation in play, minimum license 3rd assistant unlimited OR an assistant engineer OSV unlimited license.

It’s very easy for anyone with an unlimited Master to get Master of Towing.

All it takes is a 1 day TOAR simulator class, and just 20 (12 hour days) of observer time.

Unlimited HP, yes but unlimited trade restriction, no. Assistant Engineer OSV is unlimited HP but limited to OSVs only.

yes, thanks, have given up on AMO.

you would think so, since that is USCG requirement but every towing company I’ve talked to told me they’d want me to spend 2-3 YEARS on deck before even letting me in the wheelhouse! Nope, already started over as AB to get unlimited license from 1600 master. Not gonna do it again.

Can I ask why? I ask because I have been interested in going the AMO route for bridge.

AMO TSP tanker (including vacation benefit 30/30, not including holiday pay/penalty rate)
Master- 1295/day
CE/CM- 1266/day
1AE/CM-966/day
2AE/2M-777/day
3AE/3M-698/day

Do the TSP tankers require security clearance?

That’s nonsense.

Most tug companies will take any warm body with a license that comes thru the door.

We get green mates fresh out the academies, navy, USCG, MSC, etc. that have barely even seen an actual tugboat before.

All of those positions are 30/30 on vacation? Also, do the days of vacation pay the same amount as the base rate onboard (particularly for the junior officers)?

I can’t confirm the other ships but this one is 30/30, and they are not the same for working/vacation. For an example 3m/3AE $14,447.40/ 30 days (working) and $6,501.30/ 30 days (vacation) total= $20,948.70/ 30 days (total) then say you work 180 days a year that’s $125,692.20 + any holiday/penalty pay or if in a dangerous area/war zone there is special pay

What does this average out to? Is this a lot of numbers to say ~550/day?

@Hawespiper Those are two different ships and contracts. An LMSR in ROS is not the same as a TSP FOS tanker.

I’m not sure what outits you’re talking to, but in my experience, this isn’t typical. Several companies are in dire need

Exactly. An ROS LMSR only pays 2 vacation days per 30 onboard. We get weekends and holidays off with pay. This is more of a lifestyle job. I am 65 this year and have been sailing 44 years. I don’t want to go anywhere anymore. I’m getting old. My father turns 90 in less than two months. I will be able to spend his birthday with him. And I am still taking home $10K per month.

Probably averages out to less. You’re not usually getting OT every day, especially at the end of the FY and you’re not getting OT on weekends or holiday. Duty weekends/nights rotate and you get the weekend like every 4-5 weeks.
