Vickery Gate is used more during the first few weeks than any for exit. The first semester after grades follows.Later in the year it slows a bit, but still a trickle . Then comes the setbacks, people who want to stay but aren’t quite there in academics. In the second year, lose a few after their first sea trip, either finding out they don’t like it or not completing their sea project. It slows way down 3rd and 4th year. The weeding out process is tough, but works to get the best candidates to graduate.
Those plebe rules are pretty much exactly what they were when I was a plebe 30 years ago (minus the no phones because no one had a cord long enough). I am pretty sure nothing is new there so …
But you did get shore leave during those 16 months?
Some seafarers has been stuck on board for 6 moths or more due to pandemic restrictions in ports all over the world.

Bug,thats for a different thread on here. Plebes do not sail their first year. 3rd class and 2nd class do. There is no requirement for them to have a relief, but am sure some are having issues trying to get off to return to the school. The recent issue with the Maersk vessel in Norfolk comes to mind. The cadet got off, but was quarantined for the mandatory 14 days. OK with that, but still sucks in this present environment we ALL are having to deal with. He was disappointed, but didn’t hang himself.
Mental health issues, especially to the point of suicide, is a serious illness. To those saying they are snowflakes, your post is inappropriate.

BUT… this should absolutely preclude a person from getting an MMC. That degree of mental health issue has no business on a ship that may be days away from medical care.
Agree, JB, but how would they notice during MMC application? Or, what signs trigger a further evaluation? That’s the tough part when the applicant is stellar in all of his/her studies and background. I’ve sailed with a few kooks, but only recall one suicide, hopefully not job related. A CE shot himself at his wifes grave shortly after she passed. Not a young fellow.

Mass also doing stupid things to cadet candidates during the pandemic. N95 masks all the time except when sleeping, single roomed only with doors open except when sleeping, no one allowed in the room, no talking plus the usual screaming and yelling by hardos who are not even in the deckie or eng programs. No wonder US shipping is fast becoming a dead industry.
That’s not different from being a youngie any other year aside from the masks and single room. Single room sounds pretty damn sweet. Go outside and socialize. You don’t have to hang in each other’s rooms.
