Medical Marijuana?

Ok. Your not getting the jist of this. When you disclose a constant medication, the medical review board will want more info on the cause requiring the script. If they deem the underlying cause to pose a danger, even ADD/ADHD, they can disqualify you on the diagnosis if they want, regardless of the medication used in treatment.

Tread lightly with the medical board. Don’t lie if you are taking something, but be wary of popping pills your Dr gives you unless truly necessary. Also don’t lie to your employer about meds. Our policy is to disclose to master any meds, they report it with copy of script and company medical officer reviews and advises if its acceptable or not. No harm, no foul. Often a suitable alternative is suggested. If caught with undisclosed meds, even with a script, it’s immediate termination. No questions asked, no warnings.

Hold it!

Is this a discussion about Marijuana or prescription drugs? And WHY THE FUCK are we talking about adderall in a thread about an illegal drug? It’s like someone asking about getting a job on a cruise ship and being told that Bouchard is hiring PIC’s.

WTF!

Marijuana and adderall are polar opposites in every way I can think of:
One makes alert, the other slows your mind down
One curbs hunger the other causes it
One is a pill the other is smoked
One is synthetically produced the other is grown
Should I go on and on and on?

Why am I so pissed? Because I have ADD and am prescribed with a low dosage of Adderall and I have disclosed everything to the USCG and never had an issue BUT the last thing I need is some anal retentive asshole at the NMC, or some journalist after the next big maritime accident, to pull up thus thread and confuse these two COMPLETELY different meds.

If you want to talk about adderall, fine, I’d even contribute what I now but NOT ON THIS THREAD!

You may not know how it feels to stay up nights worried sick that some left coast pilot’s screwup will cost you you’re license because the one med you do take ends up on a short list of drugs the NMC watches. It sucks.

The worst part is that discussions like this confuse new mariners and will cost many with add to not get the meds they need and BELIEVE me, the last thing we need is ADD people like me not taking meds before we go on watch.

Calm down. It will be okay.

If only there was some kind of medicinal herb I could consume that had ability to calm me down. Oh why have the gods forsaken us!?!

A. I do believe we can have a discussion diverge in many directions if we would like. I guess that answers the why part soooooo…fuck off. Don’t post if you don’t like the thread.

B. sounds like “mild” ADD may just be the least of your problems. Good luck with that…

Did you forget to take your meds today?

This sums it up http://youtu.be/7pdWAcK6Eh8

The way things are going anything with caffeine will be outlawed. But if you fill the basket to the top you should be able to get enough caffeine out of the decaf they replaced the reg. coffee with.

Calm down my friend.

This discussion is about Class 1 & 2 drugs and how they could affect acceptance at an Academy and a career in Maritime.

I am happy you chimed in with your thoughts and concerns. You are correct, the two drugs under discussion are worlds apart in human response but are similar in that they are frequesntly abused.

Most ADD meds are stimulants and as such will provide sharper brain function whether studying for exams or standing watch. With mild ADD, a small dose Aderall IR should put you on top of your game for 4 hours or so. It will only improve your performace on the job if taken as prescribed.

I understand your angst about some reviewer some day banning all psychotropic medications on board. This would make life more challenging for persons who legitimately need a little chemical boost. I don’t believe this will happen however as the medical establishment would step in an advise decision makers on the diagonsis and treatment for various degrees of ADD/ADHD. Now it is possible a company may have a policy against all psychotropic meds on board and that would be unfortunate.

If your real concern is this thread might be read by a well meaning but misinformed decision maker who changes policy based on it… well …again, I Don’t think that will happen but if you feel threatened by this discussion, just say the word and I will ask Mike or John to delete all posts referencing Adderall.

Why the hell do you need meds to study for finals at a maritime academy? Did the academy’s suddenly become that hard in the last decade or so?

If you go to, say maine, you’d never consider it in the spring semester. Period.

-An ADHD diagnosed dude who hasn’t touched the stuff since middle school.
Why the hell do you need meds to study for finals at a maritime academy? .
It’s a study aid for most - not a matter of “need”. Think of it as super charged no-doze without the caffeine jitters . Most who use it would probably be fine with Energy Drinks.

The difference between now and 10 years ago is a diagnosis of ADD/ADHD is much more common and prescribed treatment meds are widely distributed.

If they outlaw caffeine only outlaws will have caffeine.

I’ll head for the hills. Try and keep up.

Anyone who needs drugs to study is a pussy. Yes I went to an academy and pulled a lot of all nighters. Never had to take drugs.

Actually this discussion is about a medical marijuana prescription and its effect on getting into n academy. You and a couple others turned it into a class 1 & 2 thread

So get over it.

I am over it. I suggest you do the same and stop being a punk

Easy guys there is no reason to get angry about… Wait what were we talking about

As an FYI, from my experience telling someone to ‘calm down’ usually has the opposite effect.

Otherwise I agree with all that you are saying. ADD is prevalent in this industry yet very few mariners have been diagnosed or are even self-aware enough to realize they have most of the symptoms.

And I’m not pissed or angry but the topic does cause me stress. I also don’t want Adderall banned from the conversation, on the contrary, I wish we all talked about it more. I just don’t think it belongs in a thread about marijuana.
Did you forget to take your meds today?
No but I did run out of Copenhagen and this morning’s coffee was awfully watered down

Understandable but let’s face it…threads morph. If we had to start a new thread for every offshoot of discussion, C.captain alone would have to start 30 threads a day.
