I’m screwed so far. All my time is on towing vessels, none of which is over 1600 tons.

You can still get one, it will just be restricted to 2,000 GRT (get inland & great lakes while you are at it). After that 12 months on unlimited tonnage will give you an unlimited license.
I’m sitting for my 1600 ton mate NC in a couple weeks. I wonder if that will Cut down on the modules I have to take for a unlimited license? I’ll look into the limited to 2000 GRT license for now although I’ve never heard of it.

See 46 CFR 11.431. You’re OK as long as it’s all over 200 GRT (but you’ll get a tonnage limit)
I will have to look at my personal logs but I’m sure lots of my past sea service was on vessels under 200 GRT. Most tugs are around 199 GRT. Thanks for listing the CFR’S. Appreciate it.
