Mariners House Boston, MA

Any body ever stay there. looks like a nice place to spend a few days. They have an add in Work Boat mag all the time. Thanks

Hell yes! Where the hell else in Boston are you going to stay in comfort (and safety!) DOWNTOWN for $65 a night? They’re great! I love it there! I mention safety only because I can think of a number of places where you could probably stay for close to $65 a night but not without a genuine curiosity as to whether you would wake up with all of your body parts and possessions intact and where you left them when you went to bed.

never stayed there, but have attended many functions and meetings there. Quality place. Just saw that they offer meals to non-guests, maybe i’ll go there for breakfast before my next round of exams to do some last minute cramming

The same location and room anywhere else would cost three times as much.

Stayed there for July 4th a few years ago - $80 a night for my wife and I - rooms at Copley for that time were over $300! Can’t beat it.

Mariner’s House is a good place to stay in the North End of Boston. The building is ancient, full of nautical nostalgia, and worth a visit. The best rooms on the top floor at $110 are worth the extra money. The $65 rooms provide a small bed, not much space, and are sometimes noisy. Plan ahead. It is often booked up. Its within easy walking distance of The Aquarium Subway Station, Faneuil Hall Market, and the USCG REC. Mariner House is a family friendly Christian organization and they do have some rules, such as no drinking, and

NO GIRLS (I had to make that stand out so old sea dogs, like c.captain, can see it).

You can stay there with your wife and children, but I don’t know whether you could book a room with your girlfriend. They have a galley that serves breakfast. Lunch and dinner is only by prior arrangement for groups, but if its running for a group, they might feed you too.

Boston’s North End is an old Italian neighborhood, but these days expect to also hear Chinese, Korean, and Russian spoken on the street. There are lots of restaurants in the North End, all Italian, and mostly too expensive. Giacomo’s (right around the corner) on Hanover Street has great food, and its the most reasonably priced (there is a reason why there is always a line outside. Its worth the wait). Parking is expensive in Boston. I’m not sure what Mariner’s House does about parking, if anything. Although it may look easy to take the subway or the water taxi from the airport, its not. The water taxi schedule can be unpredictable. Some of the streets are still cobblestone and are very rough on rolling luggage. It takes time and effort to find, and wait for, the right airport buses to either the subway or the water taxi. (Who in their right mind would spend billions of federal dollars on an airport, but then force people to take a bus to a subway stop a mile away? The taxi companies must have paid somebody off.) Expect the elevator to be broken in the Aquarium subway station (its a long way to lug you bags up to street level). Its well worth the few extra dollars to take a taxi directly from the airport (which will probably save you an hour of lugging your bags).

If Mariner’s House is booked up don’t worry, Air BnB has some nice rooms and apartments in the North End for $125 and up. Some are very close to the Coast Guard.

Also, the restaurant and bar across the street from the USCG exam room (I don’t recall the name) is pretty good and reasonably priced.

tugsailor Thanks for all the useful info very much appreciated "g"day sailcapt

Slide on over to Regina Pizza for some NY style pizza when you stay there. There are some great Italian restaurants on Hanover street too. Took my wife and daughters down and had a great meal just around the corner from the Mariner House. Never heard a bad word about the place except they lock up early at night. Boston is a great city and you can walk just about anywhere or a short T ride.

do they let you bring a hooker up to your room for a night of naughty evening entertainments?

If so, sign me up for some of that fun!

Stayed there while testing at the REC. Place is great and the North End of Boston is fantastic. Great food, bars, walking distance to REC. as was said above, you can’t beat the price. Run quasi like a ship. Strict meal hours, quiet hours, no rift raft and must posses a credential to stay. Also it is next door to Paul Revere’s house and on the historic freedom trail. Best deal in Boston hands down.

I’ve stayed there and will likely stay there again. That being said, I prefer the Boston Harbor Inn. It’s not too far up the street and you can usually get a room for $100 or so if you ask. No rules there. I get judged enough at home. I don’t need it on the road.
