Most of us have worked with mariners from many countries and of course pay is number one when we talk. I thought it would be interesting to compare pay, taxes and benefits among all of us. Example, many mariners are exempt from taxes after a certain number of months at sea. Also, many mariners have their medical needs taken care of by their home countries while some have to pay for health care. Additionally many are covered under their countries retirement plan while others have an independent pension plan. I think it would be interesting to compare.
This is NOT intended as a political discussion merely a way for all of us to understand the total compensation we receive which determines the financial choice we made in pursuing a career at sea.
