Leadership & Management STCW Course

For those of you who have taken Leadership & Management, where did you take it? What did you think of it?

Exactly who needs this? It appears to me that this is required for Master 1600/3000, but one of the schools told me that it is only required for Chief Mate and Master Unlimited.

I maybe wrong but i had read somewhere it was also required for “chief-limited” with an stcw. Who is offering it and how much ? Just something else to spend time and money on.

This requirement is for Chief Mate/Master 3000GT OR more. 1600Master = less than 3000 GT - STCW checklist says master 500 to less than 3000 (up to but not including). I read that right?

I am almost certain that anyone with an STCW endorsement as Master or Chief Engineer is required to take that course regardless of tonnage, limitation, route etc. JD Cavo had a good post with a synopsis of the new STCW requirements and their application to mariners.

Don’t know how to link to the thread but it is called 2010 STCW requirements. Above is the question and reply I was thinking of from page 2.

I thought it was required. It certainly appears so. Unfortunately.

I don’t mind taking courses, if they are any good. I just want a higher day rate to help cover the costs of this never ending stream of courses.

It’s required for ANY STCW endorsement for Master, Chief Mate, Chief Engineer, or “Second Engineer Officer” (First Assistant). There is no grandfathering, the course is required in order for the STCW endorsement to be valid after December 31, 2016.

What school told you it was only for Chief Mater and Master unlimited?

I don’t want to lambast a good school just because some staffer gave me the wrong info.

Company sending me here in January

I heard good things.

I hope to take mine there in April. Have heard similar. Also close to family with whom I wouldn’t mind spending a few nights with.

Is this in addition to the engine resource management or would this be included in the curriculum?

It is in addition to BRM or ERM.

Went there 2 weeks ago. $1200 worth of psychobabble. Guy ran us bell to bell from 0900-1800. 1 hour for lunch, to the minute. 10 mins for coffee/smoko. I mean bell to bell when I say it.

All his sea stories, none of ours. Class is in many ways not relevant to work, especially OSVs. I will say it was not as bad as I expected. I expected a b.s. 35 hours of psychology crap and it was delivered, but he did keep us awake. Ex-USN MCPO. Was out of class by 1400 on Friday.

I thought it was a 1 week course? Did I mis-read something?

For the old timers who started sailing before 1980 and kept sailing on ships until now?

I remember if the old timer sails more than a year for last 5 years, STCW renewal is not needed.

Please advise…

I think you are about to find out just how expensive it is to keep working. Got a few grand lying around? Meanwhile you may want to check out the Coast Guard final rule for STCW which was recently signed in and also scan Mr. Cavo’s very informative posts.

What about this course at Resolve Maritime Academy?

From the description - and CFR quotes - this five day course appears to satisfy BOTH Engine Room Resource Management and Leadership and Management training.
