Lateral move from Mate 1600 Oceans to 3rd Mate Unlimited?

Wondering if there is some documentation (a NAVIC??) That describes the move from Master200/Mate 1600 Oceans to 3rd Mate Unlimited? I am just starting to prepare for the 8 modules that NMC said I need to take for this raise in grade, and someone knowledgable said that there is a way to move laterally over to 3/M without taking Modules 054, 141, 142, 143, 144, 145, 146, and 011.
Any assistance on this would be appreciated.

I believe the only module you can “get out of” taking is 054 Rules of the Road if you have taken it previously in the last 12 months. Study hard, that’s what I’ve been doing the last few months…

There is no “lateral” to 3rd Mate. Regardless of what you hold, it’s original issue and you have to take the complete set of examinations unless you tested for your Mate 1600 Tons after 2/1/02. If you tested after 2/1/02, the only exam would be rules of the road.

I’m submitting my paperwork this week for upgrade from 1600-ton mate to 1600-ton master. I still need one more tour for sea time for 3rd mate unlimited.

The Coast Guard web-site does not have a check list for 1600-ton master near-coastal or oceans. The only check list is for 1600 master - inland. Is there a story behind this?

Also, this thread is the first mention I have seen of needing to take the rules of the road test again for 3rd mate unlimited. I tested for 1600-ton mate in 2008. I thought I only had to submit sea time to upgrade to 3rd mate unlimited.

does or doesn’t?

The web site does not have a check list for 1600 master. I will edit my earlier post.

Thanks

I know…the check list I pasted below is from another gforum thread:).

Thank you Mr. Cavo,

Always good to hear it from you. Where would I find the reference to Unless part of your reply? It is in a NAVIC or somewhere in the CFR that I missed?

Again thanks for all your information on this site

NMC Policy Letter 02-02

What about a move from 1600 master to 3rd, with time served as master? Im researching it now, but if someone has a quick answer would be helpful. Thanks…

The “new” 500 and 1600 ton mate tracks require the same STCW courses as requirements for 3rd mate unlimited. The test for either the 500 mate or 1600 mate meet the requirements for the 3rd mate unlimited exam.

Their are fewer STCW course requirements for 500 and 1600 ton master. The 1600 ton master test is not transferable to 3rd mate unlimited.
