Mariners House is a good place and a good deal @ $65, but there are very few doors to knock on in Boston and most of them would be slammed in your face.
Will continue to keep you all updated on what is happening, down here.
Actually, there were a few people hired with a company that had 2 new boats come out in January.
We all know it will pick up, again, but not certain exactly when.
I have been completely full with guests, this week, from Australia, Spain, Columbia, Alabama, and Florida.
Mardi Gras season has been great.
Hey, Ms. C., your new mugs are great! The 14 oz. mug did a good job with my hot buttered rum when I got home.
It was great seeing and having you as a guest at my B&B, last week, as always.
Can’t believe you have been staying with me for the last 5 years or so; time flies.
Glad you have found another way to use my new coffee mugs!!!
Perhaps it’s time for a “Knocking on Doors in NY” thread?
Phone calls and sending resumes work the best in NY. I don’t think most companies would let you past the security gate or front office. If you’re an engineer with CAT experience, make sure you put that on your resume. For the wheelhouse, you need experience towing barges, or shipdocking and recency. Deckhands have better chances with an AB ticket and RFPNW. Moran, Reinauer, and Vane Brothers will treat you the best, Bouchard pays the most, and then there’s McCallister, Gateway in Connecticut, and various smaller companies. Not sure about Kirby (formerly K-Sea) anymore. I would send in a resume and call weekly.
Except for the Gulf of Mexico, most of the rest of the world runs on resumes (sometimes called a CV). Most companies do not have enough staff to deal with a lot of walk-ins. A phone call will just get a request for your resume. If they already have your resume, a phone call or email at the right time may turn into an interview or a job. Most companies (outside of the bayou) will interview over the phone and hire off a resume. If they need to hire crew, they don’t have time to wait for the right person to just happen to walk through the door. Nor do they want to limit themselves to the guys who are desperate enough to walk in. Nothing beats word of mouth and referrals from people the company trusts that will vouch for your skills and abilities.
I just wanted to say that after recently calling “A Chateau on the bayou” I have a bad taste in my mouth. It was the rudest customer service I have ever experienced. Despite all the good reviews I have read, verbally it was no good. From just asking for basic information. I wish I hadn’t even called. Be careful how you talk to people, it just might bight you i the xxx one day!
I agree. When I talked to her on the phone she was very rude. Stayed there anyway. She is still rude when you meet her. One of her rules is absolutely no talking in the morning. Cant even say good morning to another guest. She was very mad at me for going to the dive companies first. You really have to walk on eggshells when your there. I did however get a job, nothing to do with her or the place. Got laid off three months later though. Says shes friends w/ Mr. Collins and yet her brochures are tucked away on a very tall shelf.
Ain’t life funny? I’m down here in Pascagoula and can’t take advantage of the situation. Like my location says, “Right place, wrong time.” Story of my life.
My friend who works on one of the HOS govt boats says thats not at all what it is and the story has lots of holes in it. Of course he is a new AB and usually full of shit, so who knows?
