Knocking on Doors in Louisiana

Just a bit of current news.
It’s been extremely busy, here, for the last few weeks.

1 mariner was hired as a Chief engineer with Odyssea Marine.
3 mariners were hired as OS with a great company.
1 mariner was hired as a captain.

This week is also very busy with tourists from Jazz Fest in NO and International Fest in Lafayette.

Keep in mind, that the mariners that succeed in getting a job down here have done their homework before coming.
They are aware of the qualifications and/or classes needed in trying to obtain a particular job.
They bring many copies of their resumes, so they don’t have to spend their valuable time running around making copies, etc.
It’s up to each individual to research each company and decide which company has the kind of boats they are wanting to work on (DP, OSV, ROV, utility, crew, etc.)
The mariners that make it happen are driven to success.
Ultimately, you make it happen.

As always, I recommend that mariners coming down in search of work, check in on a Sunday and check out on a Friday, thus giving yourself 5 full days to go to all of the companies.
Keep in mind, that you may have to wait in some offices 3-4 hours before you see an HR person.
You may, also, be asked to return later in the week.
Sometimes, the HR person is not in, thus requiring you to make another visit.
The entire process can take time.

I provide a discounted rate of $65/night which includes a deluxe continental breakfast.

Please remember that check-in time is from 3:00 till 7:00 p.m. ( NO EARLY OR LATE CHECK-INS! )

If I can be of help to any of you in providing nice, affordable lodging while knocking on doors in Louisiana or going to school in the area, please email me at claudettelp@charter.net, PM, or call (985) 537-6773

Wishing you all the very best!!!

Update from “A Chateau on the Bayou B&B” located in Raceland, LA.

My cleaning lady was on vacation this past week, so I only took in 2 mariners to give me a break, also.
Both mariners were very successful in getting mate’s job’s with 2 different great companies.
One was a Cal maritime academy grad and the other was a mate from another company that made a move.
This week will be back to normal with 3 mariners checking in on Sunday.
Will keep you posted.

As always, I recommend that mariners coming down in search of work, check in on a Sunday and check out on a Friday, thus giving yourself 5 full days to go to all of the companies.

A great week, here, at "A Chateau on the Bayou B&B"
Everyone finds a job.
3 mariners checked in on Sunday.
One is an academy grad who was hired as a mate at ECO.
Another is an academy grad who was hired as a 3rd engineer at ECO.
The 3rd mariner attended DP classes at Bieir Radio in Houma, LA and plans to go out looking for work at the end of the week.
An ECO Capt. stayed, here, before crew change, also.
One mud logger was here all week while working on an inland rig.

ECO hired 3 Mates, 3 third engineers, 4 AB’s, and 3 QMED’s this week.

It’s been a fun and very nice week having all of these mariners who were very respectful and kind.

As always, I recommend that mariners coming down in search of work, check in on a Sunday and check out on a Friday, thus giving yourself 5 full days to go to all of the companies.

I just wanted to let everyone know that if you are looking to find a job in the Louisiana area and you need a place to stay the Chateau on the Bayou with Claudette is where you need to be!!! There is no way around it. Claudette is extremely knowledgeable of the area and the majority of companies now her B&B by name. The information she gives is extremely valuable and also she gives a discounted rate for all mariners. One might think that sunday to friday is to long to stay to find a job and that you don’t want to spend the money but its not! It is the perfect amount of time to give a valiant effort at each company. Listen to what Claudette has to say and do it!!!. If you want a nice place to stay good information and someone to talk to during your travels the Chateau on the Bayou is where you must stay!!! This being said she is not the hiring wizard that magically finds you a job, you need to do your own research and make your own decisions, finding a job is a JOB so work hard at it like you would on a the water! Good luck to all and a special thanks to Miss Claudette!:cool::cool:

Fragrat, is there a way to check what companies new builds are scheduled to come out? Seems like there were quite a few in Jan/Feb and it was on as far as hiring. Just thought I would see if there is a correlation to the two (hiring & new builds)?

I’ll do a bit more research and post up if I find anything on this.

Thanks,

Check HOS website the rough delivery dates are usually buried in the earnings reports each qtr. The other companies you have to check workboat and marine log magazines. They usually have regular info in the articles about future deliveries.

They had 2 320s get delayed big time and they have a good number of boats going over seas, so now they need a home for those crews. I think once this all settles out, they will start hiring again.

Sounds like it will be awhile before the Chouest guys that were disappointed with the 3.5% raise can make a move to HOS.

Depends on the papers you bring.

Spent quite a bit of time looking last night @ it. Jumping around yards and company reports as you say. Seems mostly older stuff online when looking @ workboat & such all. From what I can see there is another pretty good schedule of delivery coming in the 4th. qtr of this year and again in the 1st. qtr of 2015.

They are hiring fairly regular. Every month when I go to work the boats are packed. Shipyard schedules move forward and back constantly. I’m guessing they hire based on best case scenario schedule. This way they don’t come up short handed. Regardless of delays we have to be prepared for at least two new deliveries a month. I’m sure Chouest and Harvey are doing likewise. It’s a crapshoot hiring on anywhere it seems. It’s always either the ridiculous physical or “no oilfield experience” reasons until their back is against the wall. Things will be tougher for experienced guys looking to go offshore. It seems most places are more willing to hire new academy grads. It’s that time of the year and graduations are upon us.

On my last hitch there were 5 academy grad mates, one U/L Master and 2 U/L tonnage hawsepipers— ALL NEW HIRES!!

A HOS recruiter told me that it is rare to have an Engineer with OSV experience come through. Said most are either new grads or transfer from other industry. He was quite concerned as to why I wanted to leave my current company for HOS though. I guess they want to weed out the money chasers.

seems the “ridiculous physicals” are tough for the young guys as well as us old farts.

WOW!!!
Busy week, here, at "A Chateau on the Bayou Bed & Breakfast"
Full house with 7 mariners and all find a job!!!

One Capt with 25 years in the yachting industry, hired at ECO, stayed here while going through orientation classes and already off to a boat this afternoon.

4 Academy grads were here all week, also.
2 were hired as AB’s at ECO on Tuesday.
One of them starts orientation classes, next week, and will be staying here, again.
The other goes home for a couple of weeks to return for his physical.
The last 2 academy grads are waiting for an HR guy to find a spot for them.

One OS was hired as a Cook at ECO.
Another OS was hired at Odyssea.

ECO hired 2 QMEDS, 3 training engineers, 5 AB’s, 2 Cooks, and 4 Mates this week.
Orientation classes had 25 people.

Gulfmark hired a mate and a capt. this week.
2 of my mariners were offered a mate and training engineer position, last week, but took offers at ECO.

As always, I recommend that mariners coming down in search of work, check in on a Sunday and check out on a Friday, thus giving yourself 5 full days to go to all of the companies.

Hey everyone. Long time lurker, first time poster. Just wanted to say I went down to A Chateau on the Bayou, and was one of the new hires this past week. I totally encourage you to come down and stay with Ms. Claudette. She is a total sweetheart, her house is awesome, she knows where you should go looking, and the location is perfect for going to look for a gig.

Just a few helpful tips:

If you fly in, rent a car from Enterprise, preferably away from Armstrong Airport (the price there is like $60 more a week than from other spots in the greater NOLA area). Enterprise doesn’t charge a drop fee if you return it to a different rental location (other than the airport). There is an Enterprise in Kenner near the Doubletree. A shuttle runs from the airport to the Doubletree, and the Enterprise is literally right next door. They are closed on Sundays though, so plan accordingly.

Have your MMC, TWIC, STCW-BST, and any other paperwork you might need. Have it with you. I saw someone not get a job just because they didn’t have their credential with them.

Have copies of all your paperwork. And tons of resumes printed up. And if you’re really feeling froggy, print out and fill out applications beforehand. Time is valuable. Be as efficient as possible.

Know where you want to apply. Map it out. Ms. Claudette will tell you where the places are, but it’s up to you to actually go. Again, be as efficient as possible.

Anyway, good luck to everyone.

By the way, the 2 Academy grads that were waiting for the HR guy to find spots for them were both hired as AB’s at ECO, yesterday.
One mariner completed his physical and will be staying here, again, this week as he goes through orientation classes.
The other mariner still needs to complete his physical process.

To expedite the physical process, I suggest you bring, with you, any information regarding past surgeries from your Dr.

If you are coming down with a friend to help share cost, I suggest you both have your own rental cars.
One mariner may be asked to sit and wait in the office for 3-4 hours, where the other mariner may be told to come back at the end of the week.
This is not the time to try and save money.
You have to spend money to make it happen.

Also, I DO NOT have any availability at my B&B for the week of June 15 through June 21.
Please keep this in mind when planning your trip, down here, if you are wanting to stay at my B&B.

As always, I recommend that mariners coming down in search of work, check in on a Sunday and check out on a Friday, thus giving yourself 5 full days to go to all of the companies.
