Knocking on Doors in Louisiana

Ya I guess ill go try it again soon. Hopefully I dont have to redo everything else.
I got the downcheck from Duet, they said come back in 3-4 weeks. Ill be working then so it might be a little longer for me. If any of you tugboat guys have a few extra pounds (and most of us do) get them off!

A few tips that I can pass on:
Get your rental car from Enterprise. Golden Chevy (its on the 4-lane road) has an Enterprise office at the dealership and you can return, or extend your car there.
If you have had any surgeries or injuries make sure you go to your Dr and get any info you can from them, if not then expect to go see a ā€œlocalā€ specialist in Houma on your dime.
For lodging there is the Chateau, of course, and several other mom and pop hotels. I stayed at the Bayou Inn one night and it was a little rough but surprisingly clean. There is a Holiday Inn express down there but they are $180 a night!
There is a Wal-Mart in Galliano that is well stocked for any last minute needs. There are also a few fast food places near it.
I passed the offices for ECO, HGI, Crosby Tugs, L&M Botruc, and several others while down there. Most had big WE ARE HIRING signs out front.

Good luck!
This could be the subject of a separate thread but makes you wonder why more companies don’t put some form of exercise equipment on their vessels. Granted, most tugs are too small for this but any of the OSV’s built in the last 10-15 years should have more than enough room to accommodate a bowflex, exercise bike or treadmill. Then they wonder why no one can pass their physicals being their looking for guys who are in comparable shape to a pro athlete.

every deep sea ship I have been on had some sort of gym. Some much better than others, but all had something. When I was sailing as assistant I would get my workout in the ER. Another reason mariners are getting overweight is the food. Deep fried fish, although tasty, doesn’t count towards healthy eating

How long before the IMO comes up with nutritional guidelines about how much fruits and veggies we’re getting every day and the percentage of food served at each meal that is allowed to be fried?

as long as they put alternatives. The ships I work on have to have at least 2 choices for every meal. So maybe a healthier choice to go with the other. Just because I can longer eat meatball subs for lunch and then lasagna for dinner and stay fit, some still can.

I wish there was a time when I could ever do that! A meatball sub sounds pretty good right about now…

Back when we had to sign articles before a shipping commissioner or his rep, it was spelled out in the articles as to the amount of victuals and drinking water per man.

The only workout I want is pushing the door open at Blackie’s Po Boy.

Do yall think a crew boat would allow me to keep a small exercise bike on the boat(permitted theres room) say on the bow? I like to stay fit. I work on a 92ft R/V right now and we can bring our own exercise stuff. I just don’t know if OSV companies have some type of strange policies.

If the company don’t provide thou shall not bring.

ā€œIf the company don’t provide thou shall not bring.ā€

Really? I’m not planning on bringing a treadmill to the interview. haha. But it seems like once you’d done a couple of hitches, they’d give you a little lenience to bring some inconspicuous exercise equipment. .

I’d imagine they are worried about you getting injured while working out and suing them over it. It seems thats the reasoning behind literally everything these days.

The ridiculous physicals really suck, but if you can pass by just losing a few pounds its no big deal. You are in at ECO. Its a good company. You made it. Congrats!

Yeah I think your right but, that’s some high octane bullshit!

As we end this week, here, at ā€œA Chateau on the Bayouā€, it is still very busy.

One couple, both ECO employees, checked in, yesterday, and is taking a 2 day class at the training center in Galliano.

Another OS checked in, yesterday, and was hired as a Cook at ECO.
She went through the physical with no problems other than the grip test, which seems to be common with many women.
She will practice her grip and return later to begin the orientation process.

Another mariner accepted the engineer position at ECO and went through his physical, today, with no problems.

A couple and their 3 children from Denmark checked in, today, for a few days.
It’s definitely been a very busy week, here, and a pleasure to have had so many wonderful, positive guests.

As always, I provide a discounted rate of $65/night which includes a deluxe continental breakfast.

Keep in mind, that check-in is from 3:00 till 7:00 p.m. (no early or late check-ins, please)

If I can be of help to any of you in providing nice, affordable lodging while knocking on doors in Louisiana or going to school in the area, please email me at claudettelp@charter.net, PM, or call (985) 537-6773

Well,
Looks like Enterprise rental car has decided to apply the screws. For a year now I have used their company going to and coming from work, without having to pay the $75 one-way drop off fee. They just told me the computer automatically adds the fee now, and I must pay. Guess it was too good to last.

Thanks for sharing this info, but one good thing is that you can still return the car down here for $75 and not have to return it to the airport; which can be more expensive and troubling to get there.

True, but at that price point Captain Ace is looking better all the time.

Well, everything is going well this week, here, at ā€œA Chateau on the Bayou B&Bā€

One mariner was hired as an OS at ECO.
He went through his physical and will start orientation next week.

Another mariner was offered a Mate’s position, but is still in the process of his physical.

Another mariner arrived, yesterday, and went out today looking for an AB position.

ECO hired at least 3 AB’s, 1 OS, 1 Cook, and 1 Mate.
Will keep you posted.

Another good day!
The mariner that checked in on Monday was hired as an AB at ECO.
He went through the physical with no problems.

But, since he checked in on a Monday, rather than a Sunday, and had to do his physical on Tuesday, he cannot start orientation until next week.
This is why I always suggest mariners check in on a Sunday, if they are wanting to get on at ECO and expedite the process.
He delayed the process a week, later.

Hope this bit of information helps some of you.
Best wishes.
