Knocking on Doors in Louisiana
you are always posting up how many people get hired on at ECO, were these guys on a waiting list or was it there first time walking in Nikis’s office? I know a lot of good guys with all the bells and whistles on there lic and he says just shoot me a email once a week and keep in touch.
I know for a fact that one of these guys came in 3 times before he was hired, b/c he stayed at my B&B.
It’s all about “supply and demand.” (Quote from HR guy)
You truly have to be in the right place at the right time.
Just, yesterday, a guy quit at ECO and they needed a mate.
Since this guy was already in orientation, he was put in that spot.

Your friend needs to show up in person. When they need someone they won’t waste the time to call him and see when he is available because they have five guys just as good standing in their lobby.

You got it Capt. Phoenix; that’s what it’s all about!!!
Being there!!!
I have seen it happen over and over.
There is no certain time of the year, either.
It can happen at any given day.

being at the right place! (or the worlds shortest interview)

I was invited to interview with a new company Water Taxi Miami. This is a small tour boat that runs between Bayside Miami and Miami Beach. The vessel is inspected for 38 pax. The email said I should plan to take a ride with the Captain.

While waiting for the Owner, the Mate/Deckhand gave me a tour of the boat and explained the daily routine.
The owner arrives and we chat, he reviewed my USCG license, Radio license and “Drug free Card” he then said he can not contact the Captain who is late! I mentioned I was ready for a boat ride (thinking, I can save his bacon with the passengers ready to go.) He pulls the Mate and I aside and asks me to take the trip!

So off we go. The mate gave the safety brief to passengers (english/spanish) and we motor to Miami Beach. I even assisted with refueling at Miami Beach and returned to Bayside.

The owner and Captain are there to meet us. (The captain was at the ER with his elderly father whom he cares for.) I chatted with the captain and owner who thanked me for running the trip and offered me three days a week to relieve the captain. During the busy season, there are two boats running (small center console) and plans to expand the company.

So for now I will be working Sun, Mon and Tues running tourist around the Port of Miami.
(I was just looking for a fun “Retirement Job”, if the need arrives for more income, I’ll put my LSU hat on and Knock on some doors)

Good luck to all who are looking,
Marc “a Cajun living in Miami”

Does ECO believe in Longevity and loyalty to good employees?

As much as any OSV company…

Thought I would share an interesting article in the local newspaper, today.

Houma-Thibodaux area will continue to be a great place for jobs and business in coming years, according to the 2014-15 Louisiana State Economic Outlook.

Well this week I took a long drive from South Florida to the Houma / Galiano area to Knock on some doors and apply for an AB job, I apply in several companies and most of them, told me that they didn’t have any position open, but 3 were interested in my resume and experience, today Friday I waited all day in one of the companies because the HR recruiter was looking for an open position , but no luck, so I have to call back next week or plan another trip to come back and make it happen. I stayed in Raceland with Mrs Claudette L. Pitre, at Chateau on the Bayou, she was very helpful, and I really appreciate it, her help and info save me a lot of time, if you are planning in coming to this area for the first time I recommend her place she will help you and show you a map of the area to show you where the companies are located, so you don’t waste time, her place was nice and clean, with a nice rate. So hopefully I can come back soon. Good luck.

Tico how much experience do you have?

Sorry to hear that Mario, I was rooting for you man.

I, too, stayed at Ms. Claudette’s b & b for this past week and a day to look for my first job as an OS. I had no luck. I thought The Chattueau was a great place to stay. My room was spacious, the breafast was sufficient enough for me and Ms. Claudette was a great host. I never experienced any of thr previously mentioned falacies with her. The parking was fine, she didn’t reaptedly call me, hell she didn’t even call me at all, and she didn’t personally tell me to go to any companies. She just gave me the list of local companies and told me to make my own choices on who to visit. I will have to make another trip down there.

News from “A Chateau on the Bayou B&B”.

This week I had 3 mariners looking for work and 1 mariner going to school.
Two were looking for OS positions and one was looking for an AB position.

They certainly learned a lot about the area, gave themselves enough time, and gave it their best shot.
They returned to companies where the HR guy was not in when they went the first time or the HR guy told them to check back daily b/c any position could open up on any given day.
Although they did not receive anything this week, surely they would agree that they left with many contacts and knowledge of companies that will be hiring this week coming up.

ECO did not hire anyone this week b/c Nicky Collins was out of the office Mon. through Thursday.
Bordelon Marine is looking for Chief engineers and regular engineers.
Harvey Gulf plans to complete their acquistion of the Abdon Callais boats by the end of Oct. and will be hiring OS positions, then, NOT NOW.
Offshore Marine Contractors is looking for 200 ton lift boat captains and mates, AB’s, OS, unlicensed engineers, and cooks.

Word of advise:
You must have all of your MM Documents in hand to get a job.
I do not recommend anyone wasting their time coming down, here, without these papers.
Unfortunately, one of my guest, this week came down without this b/c of the shutdown.

As always, I provide a discounted rate of $65/night which includes a deluxe continental breakfast consisting of bagels, toast, fresh fruit, yogurt, cereal bars, protein bars, ham and cheese muffins, grits, oatmeal, banana bread/cinnamon rolls, cereal and milk, juice, coffeee, tea, bottled water, etc.

A regular rate of $110/ night includes a full breakfast served at 8:30, 9:00, or 9:30 which is posted on my website.

Keep in mind, that check-in is from 3:00 till 7:00 p.m. (no early or late check-ins, please)

If I can be of help to any of you in providing nice, affordable lodging while knocking on doors in louisiana or going to school in the area, please email me at claudettelp@charter.net, PM, or call (985) 537-6773

If you are planning to come to knock on some doors, bring at least 10 to 15 set of copies of your papers, like driving license, some companies ask for a copy of your social security card, passport, merchant mariner credential (z card), TWIC card, any endorsement you have, maritime or training school certificates, resume, and go to the companies websites and download, print and fill the applications ahead of time, that will save you a lot of time, to visit more places. And definetely you need at least one week to go to all the companies, Monday to Friday is good, you mght get lucky and get hire te first day but if not, too many companies to do it just in one day or two, My first plan was to be there tuesday and comeback Thursday, but I end up staying till Friday.

Looks like things are slowing down just in time for when I was going to head down there in Jan.

Wonderful.

January would be a good time I think. A handful of companies told me they will be hiring at the begining of the year.

FWIW I heard from a recent attendee of our annual training that Hornbeck will be hiring 30-40 people a month for the foreseeable future. All positions master to OS. Now what the mythical criteria is to get one of these spots is still unknown. Perhaps if you sprinkle some fairy dust on your app before you send it your odds may increase. I may also suggest a trip to the Quarter first to get a Gris Gris bag for all you door knockers.
