being at the right place! (or the worlds shortest interview)
I was invited to interview with a new company Water Taxi Miami. This is a small tour boat that runs between Bayside Miami and Miami Beach. The vessel is inspected for 38 pax. The email said I should plan to take a ride with the Captain.
While waiting for the Owner, the Mate/Deckhand gave me a tour of the boat and explained the daily routine.
The owner arrives and we chat, he reviewed my USCG license, Radio license and “Drug free Card” he then said he can not contact the Captain who is late! I mentioned I was ready for a boat ride (thinking, I can save his bacon with the passengers ready to go.) He pulls the Mate and I aside and asks me to take the trip!
So off we go. The mate gave the safety brief to passengers (english/spanish) and we motor to Miami Beach. I even assisted with refueling at Miami Beach and returned to Bayside.
The owner and Captain are there to meet us. (The captain was at the ER with his elderly father whom he cares for.) I chatted with the captain and owner who thanked me for running the trip and offered me three days a week to relieve the captain. During the busy season, there are two boats running (small center console) and plans to expand the company.
So for now I will be working Sun, Mon and Tues running tourist around the Port of Miami.
(I was just looking for a fun “Retirement Job”, if the need arrives for more income, I’ll put my LSU hat on and Knock on some doors)
Good luck to all who are looking,
Marc “a Cajun living in Miami”
