Does anyone here remember or have attended Kildall’s nautical school in Seattle Wa? It was in the YMCA building downtown. All the old hands went there to brush up for renewals or original licenses. I remember my dad going there and I went there in about 66 or so. It was a good school with Capt Joe Kildall helping everyone and the dad who we called “Old man KIldall” did the Rules of the Road coaching. Good days in a good maritime environment.
I went there for two days in the 70’s to prep for a Coast Guard test. It was like stepping back in time. Kildall taught “boxing the compass” which I knew was no longer necesssary for the examiniation. His Dad taught latitude and longitude on a globe that was so old that it had holes in it from all the times he had tapped it with his pencil. I mean these were the real old salts from before container shipping, GPS, and probably even radar. They knew their business but it just was not relavant to me. I quit the course and went to Les Kertins Navigation School. However I am glad for the experiance just for that little glimpse back into time.
I got my original Second Mate’s License from Kildall’s in 1983.
